I'd like to thank everyone who posted their opinions and findings in this thread. I really don't think there's a "right or wrong" here. They're both appearing to be standard conventions which were never firmly decided upon. Nobody wrote out an RFC on Mathematical Expressions, so both adaptations can be found in use. I look forward to seeing how Googleians respond and argue over this one. Well. At least I won lunch. Good philosophy, see good in bad, I like!
