You don't sound stupid at all, I'm not "up" on my IPv6 knowledge either - dunno about you, but this page made it a little easier to understand why people may want mIRC to support it...I don't mind either way still.
These search results may also help others understand what IPv6 is.

And seeing as mIRC is a program that runs on the OS, it must (ultimately) stay within the boundaries of the OS's capabilities, or so I would have thought.
