I'd like to be able to stick an mIRC window on the desktop and make it transparent.

I think but I'm not sure that we still have the ability to use /setlayer but only for desktop windows (am I right?). /setlayer <0-255> <@name> 0 is transparent, 255 is opaque.

Yes, /setlayer was only changed so it could not be used to affect the main mIRC window. This post has some more information. Regards,

Seeing as /setlayer is undocumented it's entirely likely that he wasn't aware of the command.
Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.

I've written a kind of tutorial listing these undocumented commands I heard about, and has also been completed by other scripters, while adding coding example to these commands but it will be of no use here as it's written in French.

Well that was actually posted by Soul_Eater, not me. But anyway, if /setlayer isn't working for you it's probably because you're on Windows 95/98/ME. Transparency is only available on Windows 2000/XP.
