I'd like to be able to stick an mIRC window on the desktop and make it transparent.

I think but I'm not sure that we still have the ability to use /setlayer but only for desktop windows (am I right?).
Code:
/setlayer <0-255> <@name>

0 is transparent, 255 is opaque.

Yes, /setlayer was only changed so it could not be used to affect the main mIRC window. This post has some more information.

dude this is 100% possible. Have you even tried it?
Code:

/window -ad @test
/setlayer @test 50

Seeing as /setlayer is undocumented it's entirely likely that he wasn't aware of the command.

I've written a kind of tutorial listing these undocumented commands I heard about, and has also been completed by other scripters, while adding coding example to these commands but it will be of no use here as it's written in French.

I am sorry to inform you that it does not.

Well that was actually posted by Soul_Eater, not me. But anyway, if /setlayer isn't working for you it's probably because you're on Windows 95/98/ME. Transparency is only available on Windows 2000/XP.
