One thing that has left me pondering for lengthy periods is finding a way for mIRC to sense the volume that a sound/song is currently playing at. Most wil know that the volume level of a sound file will differ from the next, depending on where it was sourced from, and this applies to legally obtained files as well as the other kind.

Question: Can mIRC sense this level? I can't find a way or any explanation in the help file. If it's able to but currently doesn't I think supporting it with $vol(filetype).auto or some similar identifer would be useful. That way scripts can be written to make adjustments to the volume level with /vol <0-65535> as each new file plays in a similar way to an automatic gain control.

Oh I like this suggestion, an auto volume control would be nice to utilize rather than blowing out the speakers because the fluxuations in volume from one songfile to the next. I second that... smile

It's possible for a program to do what you're asking, but I honestly don't think it's necessary for it to be in mIRC.

First off since mIRC uses Media Player to actually play the songs I'm reasonably sure that using the current implementation it couldn't detect anything about the recorded volume level of the file, which would mean mIRC would have to add support for mp3/ogg/wav playing internally. Secondly, I don't see a reasonable need for it. I would imagine that /splay was added to mIRC so that sounds could be used for notification of IRC related things. Granted, a lot of people use mIRC as an mp3 player, but I don't think it's really something that should be furthered if it means taking up major amounts of development time (which, if my previous assumption is correct, it would) in favour of IRC related things.
