There's a website being spammed around (at least, I've seen it on DALnet) that is telling people to download mIRC 6.14. The website mimics the design of the real mIRC website, however, does not contain the side navigation bar and only contains the US download mirror links.

The site is http://www.mirc614.ca.* (domain removed to prevent people being infected).

I posted this incase anyone, like in cases before, was wondering if this was a real update or not (like when that fake 'patch' was released), and also because of the convincing design of the site.

I'm not a fan of blowing these things out of proportion and if it wasn't for the reasons above then I wouldn't post anything, nor do I intend to for every infected URL which crops up now and again - you might not even ever see the address spammed, but incase it becomes some big thing where lots of newbies are confused, it doesn't hurt to post a little something smile

Happy chatting!

Regards,

Mentality/Chris

Ah, well I'm glad I managed to fool you, however:

"I posted this incase anyone, like in cases before, was wondering if this was a real update or not (like when that fake 'patch' was released), and also because of the convincing design of the site."

If you remember, that mIRC 'patch' was spammed in a very similar way and caused quite a few threads to be made asking if it was real. I posted this in *possible* preparation for more asking the same question.

If I was a fan of blowing things out of proportion though, then I would post a thread everytime there was a new virus posted on Symantec.com, or every time I saw a new geocities/angelfire website be spammed.

Thanks for your input though.

Regards,

Mentality/Chris

Yup, good you mentioned this! But (as you suggest) let's not discuss each and every fake mIRC that is distributed; it doesn't make much sense to tell what versions are fake as new mIRC versions are only released from and with lots of information on our official website http://www.mirc.com/ and the mirrors advertised on that website.

All and each information about mIRC and it's releases that is not available on our website can and should be considered fake.

Thanks for that, Mentality.

What gets me is that there seems to be parallel evolution going on, since the so-called mIRC 6.13 was also a fake!!!

I have heard a great deal of this so called "mIRCX". It wasn't long before the site I saw it on got shut down. I remember going back to it to find out what the URL was so i could report it, and the main page said something like it didn't compart with the FCC rules for some reason.....Im glad thats taken care of though, I was going to report the URL so they could shut down the site, and possible have is ISP shut down as well. Just out of curiosity, was he making profit off of this mIRCX? confused

ummm...
You are spreading a virus. Visit www.gamesurge.net/utils/gline/ and remove it (porn botnet).

HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS? I have never clicked any link someone has sent me and i disabled dcc altogether a long time ago... so, i went to the site it told me to(www.gamesurge.net/utils/gline/) and it doesnt tell me a single thing on how to remove something or get my g-line uplifted... SOMEONE TELL ME WHY

It would have probably been wiser for you to start a new thread, as this thread hasn't got that much to do with your query.

Secondly, we're volunteer helpers here and do not expect to be shouted at. Saying "HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS?" and "SOMEONE TELL ME WHY" is very demanding and rude, so try to be nice at all times. We can understand that some problems can get very frustrating, but fretting over things does not get you helped any faster or better smile

Unfortunately, due to PGPN and GamesNET merging, the new website, GameSurge.net, is still under construction - including the Forums which will most likely, in the future, help with G-lines. For now I suggest you try Contacting GameSurge and see if they reply. By the time they do, it's possible that the G-line would have been removed.

That G-line message implies that you have been infected with a virus some how - even if you think you couldn't be infected, it's possible you are. Even if you have an AV installed on your computer, it's STILL possible! I suggest you try at least 2 of the following to check if you're infected:

SwatIT (Trojan scanner)
Trendmicro (Free online virus scan)
AVG (Virus scanner)
The Cleaner (Trojan scanner)

Do not run two at the same time as they may interfere with each other. I suggest you try a mix of virus AND trojan scanner to be sure. It is ok to have more than one installed on your computer at the same time, but *not* running at the same time smile

In future, make sure you do not:

1) Download illegal files, such as mp3s, movies or cracked software. This includes off of IRC, Kazaa, iMesh or Warez websites.

2) Do not visit "free pornography" links that are spammed to you, or websites such as the one listed at the start of this thread. All mIRC patches and new versions are legitimately available *ONLY* at www.mirc.com/get.html.

3) Do not accept files off of strangers that might offer you their pic or something. Bottom line: Only use DCC with *trusted* friends.

4) Always make sure you have AntiVirus software on your computer, and make sure it's up to date. There is often an 'Update' button, or in the case of Norton AntiVirus, "LiveUpdate" which will update your AV. Check at least once a week.

5) Always make sure you have the latest version of mIRC *only* from www.mirc.com/get.html.

6) Always make sure you have the latest Windows critical and recommended updates from www.windowsupdate.com.

G'luck smile

I'm not a newbie or stupid, like most people may say... But, I do want to thank you Mentality/Chris for letting me in on that whole VA thing, I just was going through the threads like normal to offer help to new people, when I found your thread.. Last time I reformatted my hard drive, which is a piece of poop, i had no VA software, I found out my uncle stole it to use on his computer, which kinda.. I wont say because its not appropriate, but thanks for letting me in on the things that could possibly infect my computer, I have VA on it now, but i still need to upgrade the virus definitions... anyways.. I just wanted to say thanks Chris.. even tho... the post about help in this thread in the first place was a little... uhhh... not fitted in the category?
