Keep your kids off those channels. Or off IRC entirely if you can't keep them from those channels.

this is (in my opinion) NOT the responsibility of Khaled, or mIRC .. it's yours

I agree, it is your responsibility. Why you are allowing your children even in a channel with file sharing is beyond me. If you feel the need to "filter", mIRC can already block whole channels, and allow channels you allow. This can be done under the options>>other>>lock section of mirc.

Easy answers for a difficult problem. My kids are allowed to download games and music. This is something I do to, you told me about the locking options, but I think these are far too limited.

in Kazaa you filter all the things you need, for example.

i have to agree that kids should not be in filesharing channels to begin with. But, much as i dislike it, i have to say that there are those who spam that crud in the best of channels (at least till they are caught and booted out).

I dont see how any software can totally block content, kids have to be educated and parents have to keep a close eye on them while online. While i can sympathize with the original poster, i think it would be very unwise to totally trust anything other than your own eyes when it comes to protecting children from what can go on while they are online.

Personally as said before I feel this is the responsibility of the parent, not the program.

/me raises an eyebrow but then decides you just clicked on the wrong post to reply to.

In fairness to the original poster, it is possible that their kids arent in filesharing channels, but are seeing the spam that twits send in other channels to sucker ppl into accepting malicious files/clicking on urls. Of course, one would certainly hope that parents are aware that many files that are shared arent only a safety risk, but are illegal and explain that to their kids and not allow it.

Is this something that needs to be locked with a password? If so, maybe it would be useful to "lock" a remote script somehow (hash the thing so it can't just be deleted/modified) and refuse to connect without it?

Without getting into too much debate, things that *should* transpire are:

1. Monitor what your child does (use the allow feature to specify channel. If your son/daughter wants a different channel, have them confront you and specify why it should be added. From there, you can inspect the channel to check its appropriatness)
2. Be in the same room, or atleast close by while the child is on the computer. Kids (assumingly) that young shouldn't be left alone on irc anyways. As ParaBrat mentioned, IRC is not the safest place to be, and should be monitored (constantly, if not occasionally).
3. Block DCC's as one user mentioned (or monitor them at the least). Children shouldn't be taught that it's okay to void a copyright. You should be enforcing the aspects of "proper" downloading, and the children should be aware that just because its available, doens't make it safe.

It's the simple stuff, really. I don't know about any of you but when I was a kid (maybe 4 or 5), I went to a store a pocketed something. My parents found out and made me bring it back, and confront the store manager. That was definatly enough to make me learn a lesson or two. But I guess today, its a simple "make sure you don't get caught".

Again, I don't want to start a rant, just some simple rules that *should* be abided, especially for younger audiences. No matter how much we want to believe, IRC is not always the safest place.

first off, I dont download mp3s or do illegal filesharing. So I dont have to sit here and look at the things I did in the past because I simply dont do it. If I want to litsen to music then I'll litsen to it on the radio, if I like it then I'll buy the cd.

Leaving aside the basic questions of child protection, illegality, morality etc...

How could such a filter possibly work?

There is no way that a program can check the content of a file before downloading, so you're stuck with filename filtering. This can be done through scripting anyway, but even given a massive set of masks innocuous-sounding filenames would still get through.

If, on the other hand, it is a question of dealing with offers/adverts made on channels rather than actual files, then a script could be used to filter out lines containing particular words/phrases too.

If you let me know what you want to have filtered out, then i try to make that filter for you.. and all you have to do is load a *.mrc file .. send me the answer private..

Here's a thought! Make a script (duh). mIRC is made in a way that YOU can impliment something like this in a few simple events. I would script it myself, but I have better things to script.

BTW, i agree with whoever said "Watch your kids".

mIRC 6.21 - Win XP Pro (SP2) - 2.4 Ghz - 1 GB Mem

I believe I suggested making a script earlier, but I assumed that the "lock" feature would also be needed so that the script could be "locked" (I figure it could refuse to be connected to or communicate with a server if an appropriate script is not loaded). Also, there are things other than filenames that could be checked, including:

-Are you on a common channel with the user attempting to send you a file?
-Does this user have op or voice on a specific channel (a lot of times the actual file servers are)?
-Do you have a file session with that user open or did you request a file from that user with !nickname or some other method that specifies a nickname?

How/if you would use these rules depends on the channels involved though...
