Hi , its been almost 24 hours since I registered mIRC and i have not recieved anything except a paypal reciept, no email from your guys confirming the purchase / registration code.

How often is the wait usually? are there any other benefits to registering except from being registered?

Yes, you don't get the nag screen every time you boot mIRC.

Upon registration, you also get the ability to legally use all future releases of mIRC. I'd say that's a fair deal smile

How about just having the satisfaction of knowing that you paid for a product that you use. When you buy a carton of eggs at the grocery store, do you expect anything more than just eggs?

How about this for a bonus .. I propose that if you steal a carton of eggs from the grocery store, they're just eggs, but if you pay for it, the eggs will cook themselves and make your toast & coffee for you too.

You could be on to something here .. WTG! smirk

You do get something for it .. you get to use a great product (mIRC) for life .. legally.

It worked fine before because that is what is called a trial period .. meaning you try it out and if you like it, buy it, if you don't like it, uninstall it and be done with it. Khaled is at least nice enough to not cripple it when the trial period expires like most other software does.

When the next version comes out, you will have something new, and you won't even have to pay for it because you already registered. Some software requires you to buy it again with each new version .. mIRC does not.

mIRC is like a library book. You *MUST* return the book after 30 days, no questions.
If you want to possess the book for longer than 30 days, you must buy it at a book store.

Why would you treat mIRC any differently than a library book?
Should library books have missing pages?
Both are "Try before you buy."

If this is still unsatisfactory, please email Khaled with the following message:
  • Dear Khaled,

I am extremely disappointed after having registered mIRC, because it seems I am no better off than those who have not registered yet. I had expected more than just a warm fuzzy feeling and a nag-free experience.

Would it be asking too much if you could cripple some of the features in the next release? Perhaps only registered users should be allowed to have multi-server support... or maybe only registered users should be allowed to join more than 1 channel and change their nickname. Only registered users should be allowed to write scripts too, because there are so many unregistered users out there and it's just not fair!

I don't understand why I had to pay for something when I got nothing out of the deal.

    Thanks for nothing,

PS. Thank you Khaled for keeping mIRC cripple free and banner/spyware free. - Eric

This is off the topic, but I'm confused. In a library, can't you return it, and check it back out as soon as it gets put back on the shelf?

I'm glad you brought that up.

Just as you can check a book out a second time, mIRC still continues to function after 30 days of use.

This isn't to say that you now have an excuse not to buy mIRC because Khaled doesn't forcefully remove its functionality from you... but rather that Khaled understands that a few people may have difficulty arranging $20 of expendable income in just 30 days.

The reason a progress bar was added to 6.10 is because, as people have plainly stated on this forum, many users didn't realize that mIRC was Shareware and not Freeware. The sudden panic that mIRC might cease to function after 30 days is a clear indication of people's reluctance to pay money for software. It's safe to say that many of them wouldn't register unless they thought it would cease to function. For everybody else, the checkbox was removed from the about dialog to grind away at your nerve and conscience until you finally break down and purchase it.

Perhaps books should have progress bars too. smirk

Not quite. Borrowing the book again is the same as deleting mIRC after one month's free use and installing it again. This effectively allows one who doesn't want to register a legal way of doing so since the licence does not explicitly prohibit this little loophole.

mIRC License Agreement: mIRC is shareware, which means that you can try it out freely for 30 days to evaluate it. If during, or at the end of, the evaluation period you decide that you would like to continue using mIRC, you must register your copy.

It does NOT indicate anywhere about being limited to a single installation instance. The license agreement transcends such petty attempts. If you were to switch brains or have a serious case of amnesia, that argument might hold some water.
