Just an idle wonderment on my part. In the identd section of the mIRC options, why is the system set to UNIX by default? Is this important? Shouldn't it be set as 'Windows' or 'Win32' or something? confused

From the mIRC help file:
Quote:

System
This identifies your operating system. For all intents and purposes, replying with a value other than UNIX would not be very useful for most people.

Yeah, I know that. But I fail to see how posing as UNIX benefits people. Would surely make more sense to have it as Win32 or something.

Yeah, I didn't suspect it was likely to be connection prohibiting. It just struck me as a little strange that a win box should pose as a unix box. confused

(general reply)

Your Ident setting should say "UNIX". This is an obsolete option left for compatability, and should remain as "UNIX", as I mentioned in an earlier post.

However, whatever you put in there, it is ignored by most (all?) servers. I'm sure Khaled would remove it, except that people like having total control over all settings... useless or otherwise.

i figured it was more or less something thats a dead protocal check ..... but it works putting anything in there just the same. im sure there is a character limit as with the identd itself

Ident was originally a UNIX function, as is most IRC commands. It just happens that Windows applications have caught up and these days , as you now know, you can get IRC servers and clients that work on Windows.
