A IRC chat server:
cogs-chat.games.bigpond.com/4445

When you connect with their program which is basically some kind of automated IRC client, it will prompt for a username and password, then you can connect to it using the information you have registered on their site.

the site is: http://www.gamearena.com.au/
their "IRC" client is: http://www.gamearena.com.au/files/details/html/the-arena-v138

However in Mirc using the above chat server almost connects before it says "bad password" and disconnects. I've seen people using mirc with it but not sure how.

any help would be appreciated
cheers

The server is looking for a password to be sent to it upon connection, and if it doesn't see one, or sees the wrong one, then it sends the bad password message.

To set the password to be accepted, you'll need to create an entry in the Options Dialog.

Here are the steps you need to take (ignore any that are already done)

1) Open mIRC
2) Press Alt+O to open the Options Dialog
3) In the Category list, select Connect - Servers
4) Click Add
5) Enter the information in the dialog box the shows. Please note that the port will default to 6667, so you'll have to change that to the proper port
6) Click Add
7) Click Connect to server (if you want to connect) or OK (if you just want to store the settings)

NOTE: The password must go in the box for the password, otherwise the server won't receive it in time.

well that would be the obvious solution, however putting in the password that I use to login (with success) with their so called IRC client still gives the [bad password] error in Mirc.

Yet considering I have seen people use mirc on the server, there is clearly a way to get around this.

Then I can only suggest that you try talking to one of the people that you know connects successfully using mIRC and ask them how they are doing it.
The only reason I can see for the method that I stated to fail, is if the password is being looked for in a specific manner, rather than just the password.
Example: password has to be passed in the format generated using $md5, since that's how the password is stored on the network. If that example (or something similar) is the case, then we'd need to know just how the password is being stored on the network for the purposes of comparison to the supplied password.
