some how my wife installed Mirc, she doesn't use it but now her computer fails to turn on. Windows stops at the Mirc "Connection Help" diaglog box. It says "You seem to have trouble connecting.... " It gives two buttons to click "Help" and "ok" If you click Help, it can't find the help file, if you click okay, window just sits there without load the desktop explorer....

How can i uninstall the Mirc program completely. I am able to uninstall but it continues to give this message. SO, obiviously it is still loading when Windows starts.

Any ideas? I would really appreciate it.

check you startup folders, you can find them in your profile directory\start menu\programs\startup
check your registry: HKLM\Software|Microsoft|windows\current version\Run
HKLM\Software|Microsoft|windows NT\current version\Winlogon
and the same keys for HKCU
(HKLM means HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKCU - HKEY_CURRENT_USER)
check system.ini and win.ini
that's all I can think of now, probably few of these won't work on win2k, and probably there are some more, but give it a try smile

Did your wife install mIRC intentionally? There are various trojans out there that will install mIRC on a computer, so it might be worthwhile running a virus scan just to be sure. There is an excellent free online scanner here that usually picks up IRC trojans that the likes of MacAfee and Norton can miss.

To add to what Poppy said, make a note of the name(s) of whatever that site finds and do some research on it (they usually have lots of info there on what they find) as it may well be that you will have to do some editing in registry that they cant do for you.

If your wife didnt intentionally go to ww.mIRC.com and download mIRC, then she got a trojan somewhere. Ppl really need to be careful opening strange emails/downloading files/going to infected websites. frown The connection help dialog you referred to that pops up, would only do so in some instances, if you are trying to connect to a server and cant..that suggests to me its set to autostart and trying to connect to a server by itself, which the real mIRC doesnt do by default. The real mIRC would also not do anything to muck up your OS loading.

In other words, i strongly advise you do as Poppy suggested. The site she referred you to is quite good and safe to use.

perhaps this email explains it, check the online encyclopedia hereto find out more about it, and download appropriate definitions/removal tool
