The other night I found myself typing the apostrophe and quote keys and seeing smart quotes come out on the screen instead. After some experimentation I found I could toggle them on/off with Ctrl+Shift+' (apostrophe).

I'm using mIRC 6.16 with no scripts on Windows XP Pro (SP2). This seems to be 100% reproducable here with various fonts - I only tried Verdana, Times, Arial, Trebuchet.

Is this an undocumented feature of mIRC or is this a feature of Windows passed through to mIRC?

I tested on Win2000 in 6.16 and cannot get "smart" quotes and the Ctrl-Shift-' doesn't do anything. It's probably an XP feature, but I can't test that until I get home tonight.

I started up a second iteration of mIRC and found that I can use the Ctrl+Shift+' key sequence to toggle smart quotes on/off independantly in either mIRC.

It might be a Windows feature after all. I found these other Ctrl key sequences also work in the text entry windows of mIRC:

Ctrl+' (apostrophe) Accent acute
Ctrl+` (grave) Accent grave
Ctrl+~ (tilde) Accent tilde
Ctrl+; (semicolon) Accent umlaut
Ctrl+Shift+6 Accent caret (circumflex)
Ctrl+, (comma) Accent cedilla
Ctrl+Shift+' (apostrophe) Activate smart quotes

Incidentally, I found this list in the Help file for some other Windows app.

They all do nothing here (XP Pro, no SP2)

In your mIRC options, go to IRC-->Messages and make sure "Process ANSI Codes" is checked. This seems to be the flag that needs to be up in order for smart quotes to work.

The same combination doesn't work in Notepad or any other default "Editbox" in Windows applications, so I'm inclined to think it's built into mIRC but not documented.

I found this thread on Google because I accidentaly enabled smart quotes and couldn't figure out how the hell to disable them.

Please, for the love of God, add this to the help file.

Edit: Jesus, talk about thread necromancy. Been 7 months and it's still not in the help file...

I have since discovered that these same key combinations also work within Microsoft Outlook, Word and WordPad.

I'm now inclined to beleive that this is a Windows feature which has undocumented support in mIRC.
