Many of you may know that on Saturday at approximately 19:37 GMT Pope John Paul II died in his private apartment at the Vatican. He was suffering with heart kidney problems.

The news was met with long applause, an Italian sign of respect, followed by several minutes of silence as the crowd took in the news. A BBC news reporter stated everyone stood in groups comforting each other in ST Peters Square.

Below is the popes life as we know it..

[*]1978 - Elected first non-Italian Pope for 450 years
[*]1981 - Assassination attempt
[*]2002 - Final visit to homeland
[*]2005 - Deceased.

i bet anyone who signs here didn't give a toss about him before he died. And now that hes dead everyones oh so sad. Funny how that works isn't it?

Well some on here probably wont actually know what a difference he made to the world, but when someone dies it sincerely is a shame. And I hope that he has gone to a better place where he'll suffer no more.

you mean like denouncing the use of condoms to prevent aids. Yup, he made a difference there. Probably caused a few thousands deaths cuz of that one. What a nice fella [Edit: altho to be honest its not entirely his fault, its his f**ked up religion thats the problem there, but don't you think that preventing something that i believe will one day wipe out the human race is more important than saving some sperm going down the toilet instead of dying inside a uterus? Bah, gone totally offtopic, but you know what i mean. Religion in my eyes is evil, so he is the embodiment of all that is evil to me]

I'm not even Catholic. :tongue: I just think he's a cool guy and he deserves alot of respect. I'm sure everyone of any religion would agree with me on that one. By the way Danthemandoo, that was totally rude. Like they say, if you don't have anything nice to say, dont say anything. Although i don't always go by that one :tongue:, I think it applies in this case. Talk trash somewhere else dude. I'd hate to see this turn into a religious debate. That would get pretty nasty.

If you meant the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) rather than the BCC, then I'll be pleased to tell you that they did explain the significance of the clapping.

yeah typoed the bbc, i could just see the british reportes hyping the situation up, "omg omg i cant beleive it, the Italians are all clapping at the death of the pope, those monsters!"

PS: If Romes not in Itialy, u have to forgive me, i live on the other side of the world, so cant see it to clearly.

Geographically The Vatican is located in Italy, however, it is not considered to be part of Italy.

i'm not a religous person nor am i big fan of his but, millions of people around the world can't be totaly wrong..

Problem with that is most people wheather they want to accept it or not, follow a relegion becuase there affraid of what is going to happen to them if they dont, either by threat of eternal damnation (aka marriage), or by threat of retalation for lack of faith (aka knocking her up and not marrying her). Once you release there is no hope and your damned if you do and damned if you dont, life becomes alot easier, its like , oh well what are they gonna do to me?

Oh yes, and millions followed hitler, I doubt many would say he was right, so head counts dont mean much, a single deed say more than a chour of voices.

One might well consider enabling people from all over the world to have a cheap and good quality client for irc chatting, has enabled more people to experences other people (if only in text talk) from other countries, and with luck produced a world where people might be just that little more hesitent to start yelling that its some other countries/peoples fault, when they happen to know a few of those people online.

Well actually, Pope John Paul II did manage to get something done. In death, he managed to unite various leaders from all over the world, many were enemies of one another, and they gathered in St. Peters Square to pay their last respects together. I don't know about you all, but I would consider that a miracle in itself since most of the time you can't even get them to meet with one another for discussion on various issues. A small miracle indeed even if it was for just one day...

I dont think so, from what I have read there are spilt votes here on whom will take his place. So who knows when they will decide.

I think they only get so long to do this as well.

ok ill give you a #1 on that but personally i think thats a little lame, he was dead, they payed respects to the position he held not the man (well maybe the man as well i dont know) and as to "unite various leaders" just bringing them into the same room doesnt unite them, I saw this one scene on tv of Prince Charles and President Robert Mugarby sitting next to each other, Charles looked like he wanted to bolt for the door, looked like he was thinking "omg of all the people i could have sat next to"

I believe I heard something about a nine day mourning period, before congregating to vote on who the next pope will be. I'm not positive but I think its something along those lines.

I may well have done the same thing, I often follow the formalities of respect, even if i dont think thats how the person themselfs would have lived there live, I have farewelled friends silently and respectfully with theres families, and gone out that nite and got ripped, just as they used to do witrh me, which is the more fitting act of rememberence. And as to cold, maybe I did say "(well maybe the man as well i dont know)" but as to lame, well i could call you being a lame ass for not picking up on the sarcasim, but i wont becuase thats just name calling and and also doesnt prove any points, much like you saying its lame.



They went there to be politically expedents, failing to show the "right" amount of respect would have shown the "wrong" image to other people, who may or maynot get angry and do things to you of varying natures.

We all know religion, particularly in this case as it involves the death of the Pope, can be a very sensitive issue. Please, be aware of other people's feelings, and realise the Pope was not just some man to a very large amount of people around the globe.
