Glancing at the first part of what you said... It's only playing second fiddle if you say, "Hey, I'm going to implement this, here's how you can support it.. Oh, not going to support it? Ok then I won't implement it.."
Being a pioneer is, "I'm going to implement this, here's how you can support it if you want to, but if not, that's your choice" and then to add it in anyway.
I suppose an alternative would be to have an option to 'enable/disable' the extended features. Turn it on and you get to make use of it. Turn it off, and then you see things as everyone else would.
