I don't think this is the case. Remember that in 7.0x, log viewing was removed completely and the behaviour was delegated to Windows explorer. It was Khaled's original intention to remove log viewing completely. I think upon multiple requests, he added the viewer back, specifically because Windows search is inefficient and bad. So his intention of adding it back was specifically for the search functionality, not viewing. I think that viewing was hacked together after the fact, I'm not sure there was any rhyme or reason to not just using notepad.exe. I doubt colour support was "the reason" this change was made-- IMO it seems more like a side effect of using @windows.
