I recently upgraded straight from 6.12 to 6.15 and my cpu usage is now very high, higher than 6.12 ever was, 612 averaged around 0:15:0 and that was over a week, now with 6.15 after only 2 days! it's at 0:47:08 !!!!! is this a bug or does this new client just need so much more? , so much that it takes ages to do everything else on my pc now, if this is a bug can it be fixed with a small update or is it better to go back to 6.12 and also will this mess anything up as iv'e never gone back before?

Specs are

P4 2.8ghz
1GB Ram
2x 120gb seagate Hdd

Win2k Pro sp4 all updates after
DirectX 9b

Regards

There was a thread on this "memory leak" here.

Personally, with 6.15 XP Home and XP Pro, I've never experienced this high mem. usage of any version of mIRC. I guess there must be some sort of script that is now causing the problem due to changes being made in 6.14/5. I suggest you reinstall a fresh copy of mIRC and run it, see if you get the same problemd. The suggestions in the above thread should be followed aswell, including /timers off and running a full system virus and trojan scan. You can find some resources for the latter in this thread.

This is not high memory it's cpu as per subject and the only scripts i have on, i've always had on xdccklipper and dlfilter, also this deffo isnt a trojan or virus problem, I have norton 2k4 updated, Adaware updated, Zone alarm 5 updated, and The Cleaner updated, i very rarely do a full scan though the last was friday, i usually scan just the download folder as this takes less time and doesnt hold up other tasks.

a final note worth mentioning, I no longer use Internet Explorer due to it being more holy than a damn church, i rotate with firefox 0.9 and Opera 7.50

regards

* Mentality eyes XDCCKlipper & DLfilter

People have been having issues with DCC and the like, and 75%+ of them are because those people are mass file trading. Is this happening when you have DCCs running? Do you realise that mIRC is not a file trading program so having lots of DCCs running is not normal behaviour?

More importantly, do you get the same issue with a fresh install of mIRC? It's irrelevant whether or not you had the scripts there before, things change in mIRC and scripts can, on occasion, become incompatible or less-optimised with a new version. To make sure it's a 'raw' mIRC or Windows issue, you need to run a fresh install with no large addons or scripts.

You may also try closing any 'unusual' programs that you have installed that the majority of other people probably wouldn't. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but we can safely assume programs such as ICQ, AIM, MSN, AVG, Norton Antivirus etc. are not causing the issue as millions of people use those and have no problems.

no dcc's here, although i bet 80% of your customers are using it for dccing, and i bet this adds to the popularity of your program laugh why put in the options for it if you dont want people to use it? i must admit i probably use it for 85% chat and the rest grabbing files, and although i do get a few files, im not at the moment and this is happening at the moment, so im gonna try a reinstall of mirc aslong as this doesnt mess up the registry in anyway? cos i dont really want 2 copies of settings in there, also i may unload klipper for a while and try that cos iv'e had issues with it in the past, but these were usually down to the script itself not working, though it is quite big for a downloading script but anyway, dlfilter im sure shouldnt be causing a problem, its quite small and only filters the crap, thanks for your quick replies.

on a final note as for unusual stuff, here it is though its not much and nothing new (its always there)
sound drivers, ups drivers, mouse drivers, access lock, nav2k4, zone alarm 5, bandwidth monitor pro 1.29, and mirc,
oh & the clock smile

"although i bet 80% of your customers are using it for dccing"

Two points really. Firstly, nobody is *my* customer, all registration money goes to Khaled and in certain months he sends all of that money to a charity. All of the helpers here, including regulars, moderators and the only other admin Krejt are brilliant volunteers who donate their time for free to help others. Secondly, whilst I think the use of mIRC as a file trading program I don't think it's quite as bad as 80% of the mIRC population just yet wink

"why put in the options for it if you dont want people to use it?"

DCC is a protocol that Khaled did not invent. mIRC cannot remove 'DCC' from itself, it could remove the /dcc aliases etc. but not the protocol, it is not something directly related to mIRC as other clients support it too. The FServe in mIRC is small and crude and was designed years ago, and to the best of my knowledge the mass file sharing programs/scripts that are around today do not use this FServe for their means.

I use 0% of my time "grabbing files", the only files I get are files that friends have sent me and they are pictures or text/script files. Getting mp3s, movies, software etc. is illegal and a good way to get a virus, but good for you that you scan everything you download, the large majority do not smile

"im gonna try a reinstall of mirc aslong as this doesnt mess up the registry in anyway?"

If you uninstall via Add/Remove programs and delete all icons/folders related to mIRC, then download mIRC only from this page no harm should be done to your registry. If you have set a password in the general lock area I do believe that will still be there after an uninstall, but that has nothing to do with this problem.

"sound drivers, ups drivers, mouse drivers, access lock, nav2k4, zone alarm 5, bandwidth monitor pro 1.29, and mirc, oh & the clock"

ZA shouldn't be causing the issue as many people run it. You might try disabling that bandwidth monitor for the time being and see if it makes a difference, but otherwise nothing looks like it would affect CPU usage :-)

G'luck!
