Hi,

I find that the most annoying new things on irc are bottler bots. they are designed specifically to download from XDCC bots. this is a nnoying to people who chat because they join channels and just take up a useless amount of space. get d/c every 15 mins and are just bothersome. one of these such programs is at http://www.xdcccatcher.com/ . I don't know what the rules are on Passing yourself off as another program but it is using mirc v 6.14 as it's version reply making it almost impossible to detect and get rid of. Is it possibly violating somee rule or law or something by faking what it actually is? my e-mail is ChronoCross@chronocrossdev.com if anyone from the staff of mirc ha s aresponse. thanks. Mirc rules and all imitations are pathetic.

By my reckoning it would be all to do with Khaled's desire to enforce his trademark. Then again it's not really any different to Opera web browser being able to change version reply to Internet Explorer or any of about 6 other browsers. It's a stupid idea to have these functions but in the case of IRC bots, as you highlighted, they are like that to circumvent detection as hostile by IRC security bots. One thing I have learnt as an oper though, there is more that one way to skin a cat. Every connection has a unique "signature" regardless of it's connection, ISP, version reply, etc. It's a matter of looking hard enough.

There's something that sets apart Bottler bots from a real mIRC client. Not going to say what it is in a public forum for pro-Bottler people to notice, but *shrug* you just have to look hard enough.
