Not sure if this would be a bug in mIRC itself, or some kind of compatibility problem between IE6 and mIRC 6.15. I recently formatted and decided to upgrade to ie6 upon reinstallation (i had alway used 5.x before). At the time 6.15 was not yet released, and if i remember correctly (but im not sure if i used and irc:// links or not) the irc:// linking in IE was working. However after upgrading to mIRC 6.15 when it was released, and just today finding the need to use an irc:// some very weird behavior came up.

When i clicked the irc:// link in IE6 instead of switching to my current session of mIRC and popping up a box with options (as per usual behavior) it instead opened a whole new session of mIRC (which i might add ignored the irc:// click and acted as per normal execution of mIRC).

At which time i also recieved a few error popups.

First (x) warning/error message:
Cannot find the file 'irc://xxx.xxx.xxx/xxxxx' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are availible.

I click 'OK' and a second (x) warning/error message is recieved:
Internet Explorer cannot open this helper application for irc://xxx.xxx.xxx/xxxxx,
The protocol specified in this address is not valid. Make sure the address is correct, and try again.

I click 'OK' again and thats it, accept now i have an extra session of mIRC running which i have to close off. I am not using any weird scripts of dll's or anything like that it is just plain mIRC, ie version 6.0.2800.1106 w/ SP1, os version Windows 2000 w/ SP4 all freshly installed.

By the look of the action taken by IE, im more inclinded to think this is an IE6 issue, but was suprised if that is the case that it had not been reported here before (didn't find anything with search) which leads me to believe that some kind of change in mIRC w/ 6.15 cause the new session to open rather than a dialog to appear as w/ earlier releases.

If this is infact some sort of IE issue, if anybody would know how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's an IE issue. The same thing would have happened if you tried to execute the irc:// link from the Start >> Run dialog.

In order for the connection dialog to pop up, your DDE server must be enabled. Otherwise, Windows will keep launching new mIRC instances and complaining about an invalid link handler. Type /ddeserver on mIRC and see if it solves the problem.
