I had a problem which I found the solution. Maybe this can be extrapolated to other connection problems. It is not specific to MIRC but to all IRC clients.
Thread here
It might solve a lot of your connections problems if you have trouble under XP. It is due to Winsock which configuration has been corrupted/modified. To fix it,
"Keep somewhere your IP configuration for Internet. Then you will need to repair/reset Winsock configuration.

To perform this, download Winsock XP Fix 1.2

Run it. Then you will reboot your computer. Configure your IP properties (since it's been cleaned) and the problem should be gone!!!!"

Please reply if it has helped to fix some of your problems

That explains quite well the problem according to the website:

LSP-Fix is a free utility to repair a specific type of problem associated with certain Internet software. This type of software is known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP, a piece of software that can be inserted into the Windows TCP/IP handler like a link in a chain. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software, this chain can get broken, rendering the user unable to access the Internet.

Most of the Internet connectivity problems arise out of corrupt Winsock settings. Windows sockets settings may get corrupted due to a networking software installation, spyware or remnants of it. You may notice errors such as "Page cannot be displayed" or similar, in Internet Explorer. You will be able to get connected to the Internet, but the packets won't transfer back and forth. One of the main cause for these problems is the corruption of Winsock settings. In any case, you may use these methods to repair/reset the Windows Sockets settings to defaults.

Does this have to do with "mIRC has caused an error and must shutdown"?
