The total effect of dark matter (the universes repellant force) is greater than that of gravity thus meaning the universe will forever expand.

Actually -- dark matter is there because we cannot explain the gravitational effects observed (the observable universe weighs less than it should smile - dark energu is the driving force of the never-ending expansion.

"Observable universe" does indeed refer to the bit of the universe that we can observe. Since the universe is approximately 15 billion years old (plus or minus a few billion years depending on who you are asking) the observable universe is around 15 billion light years in radius.. That amounts to around 142,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 km or 88,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles. More numbers that are too large to mean anything to us smile

If I knew now what I will know then... maybe things will have been different...

Then shouldn't a better system, such as IPv8 be getting developed? I mean only 88,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles.. :-\ Bound to run out of IPs (using IPv6) quick with that much space to cover...

grin

My source of info ("Universe" by Heather Cooper and Nigel Henbest 1998) says darkmatter is responsible for the expansion, though perhaps the book is somewhat outdated now. Can you recommend anything more recent? The Universe does fascinate me laugh

Re IPv6:
I read somewhere that it is still in its testing form, which is why it's not being widely deployed. Any truth in that?

Currently, the internet uses IPv4 technology, which allows for 2^32 nodes to be connected to the internet (assuming no network address translation is being done), which amounts to 4, 294, 967, 296 possible nodes. In spoken word terms, that is four billion, two hundred and ninety-four million, nine hundred and sixty-seven thousand, two hundred and ninety-six possible nodes.
Unquote .

Actually, that is 4 thousand 2 hundred and 94 million 9 hundred and 67 thousand, 2 hundred and 96.

A billion, according to the real world, is 1,000,000,000,000 !

Now, three zeroes may seem trivial to most people, but I can assure you, you would notice the difference if you were counting out loud!

Cheers,

DK

I have never heard of 1 billion == anything more than 1 thousand million (1,000,000,000). Ask Kerry Packer for confirmation because he has eight of them in his bank book.

I believe the numerical value of a "billion" differs from the US/AU and the UK (and possibly the rest of Europe). That's what I've been told anyway. I'm not saying a billion dollars != billion pounds, that's obvious, but the actual number of 0's at the end is different.

Google will probably tell all.

Edit: The above is true, Google is a fountain of knowledge grin - See this page.

Regards,
