It means the server you're connecting to couldn't look up your hostname - when you get this message the server uses your IP address.

Type //whois $me - This will show your own /whois information. This line is where your hostname/IP is put:

Nickname is Username@hostname.or.IP * Full Name

A hostname looks different to an IP. Here's some examples of hostnames I picked from a channel I was in, to show you what they look like:

45-123-231-789.Gent.GoPluuus.FastDSL.tiscali.be
123-172-789-64.cpe.nsw-3.comcen.com.au
dpc1232196126.direcpc.com

And you also get vhosts (virtual hosts) which look like:

when.i.ask.feds.for.help.they.gline.me.uk
core.delinked.us
i.am.really.a.flat-screen.tv

Your hostname is not resolving correctly, so you get an IP address, which looks a bit like '123.130.249.83' etc.

One of the reasons your hostname doesn't resolve could be because you have a Firewall on. Try disabling any firewalls you have - if your ISP has you firewalled, you'll have to contact them (they often don't tell you they have one). This reason is also why you might find:

-server.name.here- *** Could not find Ident response

or words to that effect. This is when you have a '~' (tilde) in front of your Username.

There could be a problem with the server too, try other servers on the network you're connecting to. Alternatively, try other networks and see if they too pick this message up. If it's just one individual server, try finding out the Server Administrator and emailing them - you might find their nickname/email on the network's website. If you don't know the network's website, search search www.google.com.

It seems people with this issue also have issues with DCC and IdentD. I suggest you also read the following threads/page to help resolve your problem, they could be related:

enable identd
Can't DCC Send
Server errors and connection problems

G'luck! :-)

You can also try change the settings in File-->>Options-->>connect-->> Local Info .. then change the settings there.. if it's set to Server set it to Normal, if set to Normal try set it to Server, didnt see that in the reply to your question, if i missed it, then just ignore my post smile
