I'm sure that has been brought up before, (I'm not sure when how or by whom) but italic text would be nice. Like control+i makes text italic in the channel and query windows etc.

Yup, here is one such thread. I think italics would be nice to have, unfortunately, CTRL+I already counts as something and if it's to make sense and fit in with the other control code key combos, it would have to be CTRL+I. My 2 cents. Regards,

There is no need for strikethrough or flashing text. Thats worthless. Italics could be handy though. Control+I returns character 9, which has no usage at all. Could be easily replaced.

Just as clarification, I never said there was any need for strikethrough or flashing text, I am not in support of that.

Control+I returns character 9, which has no usage at all. Could be easily replaced. ASCII character 9, aka Tab, which is actually a very useful thing to be able to type even if mIRC doesn't display it as a tab. As I mentioned in the thread Mentality linked, some clients already interpret mIRC's reverse control code as italic, personally I'd rather see that used instead (or at least as an option) seeing as reverse colours is pretty much useless.
Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.

just a comment on this Mentality, he could swapt CTRL + T (tab - which isn t being used) with CTRL + I (for italics - which is the standard in a ton of programs) and thus not have it be an issue

Why not just insert tabs with the tab key?
Or just make up a control code for italics and let users configure these keys themselves.

There's that too Altho I like the tab key switching between the editbox, 2nd edit box and nicklist. This way I dont have to use the mouse to switch editboxes

i dont see how the second editbox is beneficial. I dont use it, but I simply cant see the purpose at all.

I use it for ops talking in channels so instead of typing out onotice, /omsg, /ops ( a VERY familiar alias for many people) etc, I just type out my emssagte and it sends it to the ops. In this respect it feels just like typing a normal message since no command is needed

Like Landon, i find the second editbox handy in channels where i dont keep a separate opchat window. Often i may start typing a post to opchat, but need to stop to answer someone in the channel. With the second editbox i can do that easily and not lose whatever track my train of thought was on. also cuts down on accicently posting things to the channel when i meant it to go to opchat mIRC has so many features and no one uses them all, but nice to have them for those who do like them.

I'll go one further, with the ease of configurablility (is that even a word???) to the 2nd editbox, it can do sooo many things. i ahve it set to do op notices, op/voice notices, voice only notices and standard notices based off of my channel mode (op, voice, regular user) and it has come in handy already

I just use the regular editbox for all of these things and dont lose track of anything. It must be hard for you all to multitask.

Not hard at all, the 2nd editbox jsut makes it easier for us is all. Besides, keep in mind that just because you dont use it doesnt mean it's not useful. That's an attitude that's becoming more and more common these days on this message board.

It doesnt matter how well landon and i do or dont multitask. You said you couldnt see any benefit to that option. We just explained why we find it beneficial. i'm sure there are options you love and i never use. mIRC's flexibility, the variety of features that one can use or not use is a big part of its appeal. If i dont like a feature, i simply dont use it. That doesnt mean there arent a lot of ppl who happen to like said feature. Going back to the subject of this thread as an example, i prolly wouldnt use italics, but obviously some ppl would. All a matter of personal choice.

Ok, The idea of changing TAB key wasn't a good one. Although the fact remains that CTRL+I functionalty could be moved to another key, And the current CTRL+R could be switched to CTRL+I and changed to italics. This would not break any old script, And perhaps it could be configurable in the options.
At first not many people would use italics, Probably because mIRC has deprived them of it for so long they are used to emphasising words differently. Either way i'm sure it would be a lot more used than reverse text is.

*chuckle* i dont use reverse text either. i'm not against the concept of italics. Judging by the numbers of posts over time that we have seen asking for italics and (shudder) emoticons, i'm sure lots of ppl would in fact use them. I dont feel in the least bit deprived because i cant. If i need to emphasize a command or make it stand out so the user doesnt misunderstand, i just use bold. works just fine for me personally. If we had italics i'd likely still use bold because it suits my purposes better than italics would. As far as being for or against italics, i'm neutral. Just because i wouldnt use it doesnt mean i dont recognize that others would. (and at least italics wouldnt be as annoying and cluttery as emoticons)
we've had a lot of threads on italics that went into techincal aspects. if you'd like to read them, just use our search feature and set it to all forums and all dates.

There are MANY options that mIRC could have in the future, but lets not forget about how smooth this program runs. If Khaled adds every little thing people think would be "neat" to mIRC, it would take a gig of ram to run smooth. As is right now, a p1 133 with 16mb ram will run mIRC good.
My 2 cents.

You're right, implementing italics would increase the size of the mirc.exe to at least 4 GigBytes. (if the code is extremely optimized).
I wonder why Khaled made a GUI, we could all chat on a DOS console window, so that we can win some precious kilobytes.
