Forums Connection Issues unable to connect to server (Connection timed out)

I am truly sorry for the repeat title ( i know it has to be)

lol...but um for some reason i am having trouble connecting to anything.

i am connecting from a university, but last fall we was able to get on with no problem. This semester seems to be different. I dont know what they changed or whatever, but im not able to connect to anything

mind you....our school does not have a firewall, so i find it kinda hard to blv they are blockin ports

any suggestions?

help would be greatly appreciated, thx in advance.

You could run a Search for "Connection timed out" or "University" to see other threads. Expand to 'All Forums' and 'All Posts' for best results.

However, the most likely explanation is that they are blocking ports - they may not necessarily inform you of it because they see no need etc. Many schools, universities, colleges and work places do prevent IRC access due to the possibility of getting viruses or illegal file trading that they don't want on the network.

Really, the only solution is to talk to a network administrator (perhaps the Head of the IT Dept?) and see if they can help you out.

If it does aspire that they have blocked the ports we do not help with evading these blocks.

naw they arent blocking ports..... i know this for a fact

my roommate and i work on the school's IT staff.....its ashame too cuz our school doesnt wanna put out the money to get us a firewall.....SO i know they wouldnt block ports.....

and this new setting just recently changed....like i stated previously, last semester (last fall) mIRC was able and willing to connect....now it wont.

what happened?

People will post if they wish to, re-posting asking for help is unlikely to get you any more attention.

I still maintain "Really, the only solution is to talk to a network administrator (perhaps the Head of the IT Dept?) and see if they can help you out." - They know the network setup and other problems that could be causing the problems. Ask for *Any* changes they may have made.

I find it hard to believe that a school with thousands of whatevers worth of computer equipment and chock full of curious students would risk not having a firewall. My suggestion is that they do have one and have decided to keep quiet about it because they don't want the students accessing chat rooms with their network. This scenario isn't exactly unusual.

i guess i forgot to mention that i am on the IT staff.......


but anyways...yes we dont have a firewall...and im prolly sure you would find it hard to blv that a campus like us...doesnt have a hardware firewall....but its true....true indeed...for some reason our department only gets the bare minimiums....they dont think its effective enough to have a firewall


that is why our server(s) started messin up....at the beginnin of the year....alot of students computers (mainly freshman) were pingin the server....and taking up alot of bandwidth....turns out it was viruses pingin the server and all the bandwidth was due to major trojan horses.....but now that our school has had to deal with that....they are just now considering a firewall or should i say giving our department enough money to get a decent firewall

and yes i know this is not an unusual problem.....but with a nonfirewalled connection...... i would think irc would be able to connect......but its not...
