Hi, sorry if this has been posted before but i couldnt find an answer that fixed this issue on this computer. I have had this computer for awhile but just recently had to start using it to log on to the internet but every time i try to log into a server in mirc it gives the message "unable to resolve server." I dont know if there is a firewall or not and if there is one i dont know how to find out, I do know that it used to be hooked up to a network but since i bought I have not had it hooked up to one.

With all due respect, the third post from the top on this area of the forum, Common IRC Errors gives info on Unable to Resolve Server.

The server you are trying to connect to either:
- is delinked or down= try another server
-is set to not resolve properly= try another server
-your provider is having a dns problem = try to connect to the ip rather than the domain ( like /server 123.123.123.123 instead of /server dudly.doright.some.net) (those are made up)

to test for dns issue, first type (in mIRC's status window):
/server b0rk.uk.quakenet.org

if you cant connect, type:
/server 213.221.165.248

To find other servers for the network you want to connect to, check their website. If you are unsure of the url for it, just type the network's name (like DALnet, Efnet, Quakenet, Undernet, etc) in www.google.com. By network, i dont mean like your puter was at one time networked (connected to other puters) i mean IRC networks (where you go to find channels to chat in)

Thanks for replying though I have tried many servers i still get the same message and i have also tried using the ip and couldnt get that to work. I tried again and it says no route to the host. What am i doing wrong. And for the network I only mentioned it because I am having a similar issue with yahoo and it seems like there might be an issue some settings on this computer.

As the link that ParaBrat provided says:

"This normally means you are not properly connected to the Internet. Your Windows cannot find out how or where to find the IRC server. It has nothing todo with mIRC or IRC! Check your connection (reconnect if everything seems fine) and try again."

If you've tried this already, perhaps there is a problem with your ISP. Seeing as you've only recently connected the computer to the Internet it's very likely something has been done wrong. If you're a cable user make sure all the cables are in the correct ports on the cable box and everything is connected correctly. It's best to contact your ISP and go through every step of connecting to the Internet to make sure everything has been done correctly. Although these "Connect to the Internet Wizards" that come pre-installed with a lot of computers now are very good, there is precious little that can be exchanged for one-to-one interaction with a human! (hence why there are no auto-responses on these boards!)

Also disable any Firewalls you have running, including if you have Windows XP's firewall enabled (see these instructions - by default this shouldn't cause connection problems, but if settings have been severely altered it's possible).

I also suggest running a Search on various connection problems. Try to be specific in the search rather than searching for an entire sentence. For example, instead of "I'm getting this annoying error saying something about no route to host" just put "route to host". Expand to 'All Forums' and expand the date range to 'All Posts' for best results.

G'luck! smile
