Under connect options, you would have a list of connections using different usernames and options. (including "connect on startup")

People could use this to either have mIRC auto-connect to several servers with different nicknames (or the same nickname), or to have different infos for 1 server. This would be good for if multiple people use the same computer and go on IRC. Instead of having to play a tug of war with the settings every single time they want to go on mIRC, or have multiple instances of mIRC intalled, each one using different settings.. One mIRC could be used.

To expand this idea further, perhaps there could be an options in the "Options" window to use a different ini file for all settings. It could be tied into the connect settings by allowing someone to specify which settings ini file they want to use (if not the default) for the rest of the settings. They could even have different scripts loaded for each profile.

I'm sure you can imagine how useful this would be for many people. I also happen to think that this could actually be done quite easily.

(just think about if you had to have multiple instances of AIM installed or you had to juggle ini files around before starting AIM each time to switch between users on it. Do you think most people would even realize that they could juggle around ini files to switch settings/info? And even the majority of the ones who got the idea into their head, how many of those would actually be able to do it?)

-i<filename.ini> forces mIRC to use the specified INI file.
-r<rootdir> sets the root mIRC directory (by default this is where the mIRC EXE file is)

Make shortcuts which'll start mIRC with those params:

c:\mirc\mirc.exe -i"c:\mirc\user1\mirc.ini" -r"c:\mirc\user1"

just make sure the directories & ini's exists... and for the main mIRC you could create a script with a dialog for you to launch "other mIRCs" with diffrent profiles...

Let me clarify as to why.

What you said will work, but still, it's not apparent to people to know that they can do this. If it was actually in the options and it was easy to switch back and forth between users, I think it would be something that would be used a lot by many people, but as it is now with the current method, only those with the knowledge of how to do it will do it. Especially for those people who don't want to script anything for their chat client or create custom shortcuts. (you'd be surprised by how fickle most people are when it comes to computers. The moment you mention anything other than 'double clicking an icon' their brain explodes. I've seen it happen, and it is not pretty.

I agree. It should not be necessary to create a script to take advantage of the multiserver features.
