there are numerous threads on likes/dislikes re various versions, use the search feature to read thru them. You will get the best results by setting it to "All Forums" and expanding the date range.
we dont do polls here, sorry

They don't want a poll since they know it will show a great deal of people are upset with mIRC.

oh give it a rest codemastr. i'm not saying we never will, but how often have you seen us do a poll about anything here? we just prefer to not do polls, period. its absurd to suggest we wont simply due to this particular subject when you well know we dont do polls.
As for not wanting to see if ppl are pleased/displeased with a version, do i really need to post urls for the many threads on the subject? You should be able to find them easily.

You don't have to past urls for other threads discussing versions, as thats not what i want. I don't want a discussion, just a simple count of what versions people are using, i can't go on all the IRC servers, do a global wide version check and come back and paste numbers. A poll shows numbers, not discussions, if i wanted that, theres a few threads on the first page of the general discussion board which would have been quicker to click than start a new thread.

This msg board has 27,084 registered users. mIRC sends out a million email announcements to those signed up to recieve them. No way to know the actual count of all mIRC users, but as you can see only a small % come here. Considering that its likely that a small % of those would respond, the results of any poll certainly wouldnt be accurate. Therefore a poll here would be statistcally useless.

When scientists do an experiment, they compare a small number of a population, and look at the results from within that group. We all know smoking is meant to increase the chance of getting cancer. how? because scientists did a study of probably 100,000 people or something like that, maybe even less. When a new drug is tested for side effects and affectiveness, its done through a small test group. Most things that are tested, are tested via a small population.
Most people are right handed -- How do i know this? because a study was done of a group of people. There are no records kept of what hand people use, and it would take forever to check every individual. It is fair to say, that the majority of scientific conclusions are based on tests on a small number of random people.
The results of a poll here would be inaccurate as far as knowing what every single user thinks, but 30,000 is a large number of people to get a very realistic idea of what people think...

Scientists work on the basis of statistical significance. Given the problems already stated by Parabrat, would the number of responders in favour of a particular version be statistically significant in terms of the total mIRC user base (assuming that a reasonably accurate estimate of same could be achieved...)? Somehow, I doubt it... but someone else is welcome to do the maths and prove I'm wrong PastMaster

You already know what people think...why just make it even more obvious? And why would you paste results here? I thought it was just you that wanted to know the results.
You're clearly just trying to prove a point, and it's already been proven enough times *Shrugs*

oh give it a rest codemastr. Nah. If you don't like what I say, delete the post. I'm not about to change my opinions simply because you don't agree with them. i'm not saying we never will, but how often have you seen us do a poll about anything here? we just prefer to not do polls, period. its absurd to suggest we wont simply due to this particular subject when you well know we dont do polls. Right, my point was you won't make one of those rare exceptions in this instance because you know the outcome will not favor your stance. As for not wanting to see if ppl are pleased/displeased with a version, do i really need to post urls for the many threads on the subject? You should be able to find them easily. Yeah and how many of those threads have been locked and how many have had posts deleted?

They don't want a poll since they know it will show a great deal of people are upset with mIRC. This is not an opinion, it's an assumption, given the fact that you didn't back it up with anything. It was such an useless and provocative post. I'm amazed you still wonder why threads and posts are deleted and locked.

And i'm not about to change my opinions simply because you dont like them. If you want to make raging assumptions to suit your negative viewpoint, have at it, but dont be surprised when someone objects.
Favor my stance? My stance is: You like a particular version? fine. You dont like a version? fine. Everyone has a right to like/dislike anything they want. Use whatever makes you enjoy the IRC experience. Favor that or dont, also up to each person.
