When I receive a memo from some1, is there some kind of identifier for the nickname of the person who memo'ed me?
Because $nick returns "memoserv"

Is this an on NOTICE event? You can reference the nickname with the corresponding $N identifier ($1, f.ex.).

Assuming you are on dalnet, the memoserv notice is formatted as:
New memo from <nick>. For more information, use: /msg
MemoServ@services.dal.net
LIST
In other words, $4 is <nick>. and $left($4,-1) is the nick itself. In the on notice event.
