Easynet's IRCnet server in the UK seems to have vaporised.

I have heard from various people that this is apparently because, a la Micro$oft, they are shutting down their chat services due to child abuse/grooming/etc. issues, but --- can anyone confirm this as FACT? There seems to be no statement from the company about it anywhere in the news, ditto no press release on their website.

Anyone have any concrete info.?

According to my server links lookup, easynet.net on IRCnet is still up and linked with Demon's server...

Umm... why exactly would MS have the ability to close down a chat server? Furthermore, why would MS really care about child abuse? Furthermore, how does a PC abuse a child? Nothing in that claim makes any sense.

Not sure if you've been on holiday or something, codemstr, but Microsoft has announced that it will close down most of its non-US chat this month.

I used this as an analogy only, it has NO direct relationship to Easynet ("a la" == "in the manner of") wink

No one company can shut down an entire IRC network unless they happen to own all the servers connected to that network like MS does for the MSN network. For the other multiple-server IRC networks, generally each server is owned by a different company. One server can be closed down by that company then, not the network.

Also - the best source of information in matters like this is the official network website.

Yes the HUB is there, but the leaf to which one can actually connect as a user has gone.

And Easynet is run by microsoft? Easynet seems to disagree. The Easynet IRCnet server is owned by Easynet Limited, who, according to their website, has no relation to MS.

Hmmm. The fact the hub is still there suggests to me that easynet hasn't given up on the idea of hosting an IRC server. Perhaps the leaf is down for maintenance or something...

You may like to read this IRC101.org article. I don't know who their sources are though.

*sigh*
You know, having used IRC for a decade, i.e. since before mIRC was even a glint in Khaled's eye, I really do think I know that. And I actually said that I had heard that Easynet were closing THEIR chat services, not everyone else's, LOL.

I also stated quite clearly that

So I have indeed checked their website. IRCnet not having a central "ownership", I *also* checked the ircnet.org and other sites related to the network, and other than a mention on the former by Lorry I saw no info. at all, let alone an announcement.

Please read what I wrote. Specifically:

No one is suggesting that MS owns Easynet. It is an ANALOGY. If you don't know what an analogy is, I recommend dictionary.com.

Thanks for that, Mentality.

For those with an interest, IRCNET.COM issued a statement confirming the shutdown today. Copy below (ok, it's not a reply, that's just how the board presents quotes).

ircnet.easynet.co.uk gone

Easynet decided to delink their client server from IRCnet. Rumors are they did it for the same reason as MSN is also closing their chatrooms. Negative propaganda in .uk. Too many perverts chatting

Hmm. I regards to that statement, I live in the UK and haven't seen any 'negative propaganda'. I wonder what they're referring to? crazy

Shevaun Pennington?

And that other person.

haha, the newest threat to IRC is little girls who run away with dirty sick minded people that need to be stuck on an island and shot.

But at least it's less complicated than DDoS attacks =)
