is there a command that shows your own host name on a server without joining a channel first?

The server doesn't give you a host, your ISP does. On some networks all hosts are auto-masked when users log in, is that what you mean? In either case, a whois on yourself will show your hostmask.

The IAL is only updated after you join a channel. If you want your hostname (I assume you're talking about +x stuff) get it from /who and use raw events to capture it.

If there's an identifier, you can use it as a display command as well...

want to display $address($me,1) , try
//echo $address($me,1)

Depends on your network and the IRCd they're using, some of them will tell you in the RAW001 when you connect:
--> Welcome to the Internet Relay Network nick!ident@host.com
If this applies to you, catch the raw001 event.

otherwise, you can always use "to the server" commands like /whois or /who $me or any similar command.
