Persoanlly i have no idea how to get around this. It seems my college has either blocked the ports that IRC runs on so i can not download or they have capped it so no one would download. It downloads at .23k a sec. Other sites ican download from 128k to 290k a sec. can i change the ports or what can i do? i looked all over the site....cant find anything on this!.,,,i can get connected to the chatroom but the damn DCC transfers wont work. anyone? thnks

If your college has blocked IRC and/or DCC, then that is because they don't want you to use it. We will not help you break their rules. Furthermore, generally, if you do break your college's rules for internet usage (which is what you want to do), then you are generally subject to fines and expulsion, so think about that before you decide to break their rules... If however you are allowed to do this, then you shouldn't be talking to us, you should be talking to your school's computing department.

Good point. BUT- there are NO rules on what can be downloaded, and what can be used on the network. Kazzaa and other P2P progs are permittied and not capped, or are capped at a low speed, but they said that the IRC clients are permitted, but i did not ask why i can not download. Its not against policy or anything, i checked on that previously, i believe its soemthign with their firewall setup in that area, not nesscessarily with IRC itself, can uexplain to me wat proxy, socks 4 and socks5 is? thanks.

btw the DCC trasnfer DO WORK, but are extremly slow, so did NOT BLOCK THEM. Also i am not doing anything illegal here, i jsut want to get on my friends DCC server to access some files for my projects. so this is acutally pretty important no i am not trying to break any rules.

A proxy will generally make a download slower. Additionally a proxy is not free. If it is an issue with their firewall/network, then the only ones who can solve it are the people who administer your school's network.

there are NO rules on what can be downloaded,

That mya be true at your college, but there are strict internet policies that far surpass your college. Things your local administration (State, country, jurisdiction) perhaps frown apon. Just becasue the college says its ok, is it?
