is there one socket that could check both pop and web mail for new emails? i have only seen ones for pop, or ones for hotmail, but what about pop and all web mail?

No. POP2, POP3 (Post Office Protocols 2 RFC 937 and 3 RFC 1939), HTML (HypterText Markup Language RFC 2616) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol RFC 3501) are the 4 most commonly used (though certainly not the only) email protocols you would have to learn in order to be able to check different sources of email accounts.
