I am in a channel that was taken over last night. I am just curious how someone can come in and deop everyone there and op themselves. Not trying to start anything, but just curious how it can be done and if there is anything I can do if it ever happens again. I get a voice in the channel usually. I would like to be able to help out ridding the channel of these people the next time something like that happens.

When you say he opped himself do you mean it showed as "Person sets mode: +o Person"? If so then he is either a server admin or the server you are on has a bug in it.

in the server/network that you go on does the channel have an op and half op password?
if so you can script a protection so that when u get deoped, you can reop and deop the deoper wink

If you are on an IRCX server and want to find out how this is done, I suggest you read the "Extensions to the Internet Relay Chat Protocol (IRCX)" internet draft, which you can find here.

If you don't want to read it all, then at least read the information about the ACCESS and PROP (including its properties) commands.

Umm one note about that document you pasted, that document is obsolete. It says right in it "Expires: December 16, 1998" thats 5 years ago.

I haven't been able to find a newer one as descriptive as that one. Some webpages describing the IRCX commands exist on Microsoft's labyrinth of a website; but most of them (if not all) don't go into detail about the error messages, channel properties, etc.

It's even funnier that by "Sep 9 2000" (when the Microsoft Exchange Chat Service Server 5.5.2653 was created) not all of the IRCX functions had been implemented on Microsoft's own IRCX server.

Although that document is obsolete, I can assure you that the ACCESS and PROP commands still stand as described in that document on Microsoft's IRCX server version 6.0.6249.0 (created on "Jun 18 2002"). Also, I haven't found any differences from what is described in that document for other commands and how they currently work, but I cannot guarantee that there aren't any.
