Use a network that masks your IP for you. You could use a proxy or a bouncer but you'll just add latency to your connection and some networks disapprove of them anyway.

Undernet is one of the networks that'll do that. But mIRC itself doesn't mask your IP.

in case your worried about anybody seeing your ip, use this as well.

on *:JOIN:#:{
if ($address($me,1) == $ip) {
/disconnect
//echo -a non-masking network
}
}

also i suggest if you dont trust the admins of a network either, i wouldnt bother using irc at all, because admins have your ip as soon as you connect.

Some IRC servers hide your IP/hostname by scrambling part of it. I'll give you an example.

I can connect with the full address: Watchdog!Blah@CPE-203-51-8-100.nsw.bigpond.net.au

Yet only myself and opers can see this.

All other chatters see this instead: Watchdog!Blah@=kT56c.nsw.bigpond.net.au

The red bit is the scrambled bit, in this case hiding all digits in my hostname. Some servers have this ability while others do not. All that you need to do is find out if your server does it and if not then people will be able to see your IP or hostname.

Options:

1. Connect through a BNC or Proxy

Advantages: Your real IP/hostname is hidden
Disadvantages: More lag and less security.

2. Use an IRC server that does the above-mentioned hostname masking for you.

Advantages: The best security available.
Disadvantages: None.

3. Do as you do now, but realise that people knowing your IP can lead to problems.

I'd say most use shell accounts running BNC (IRC bouncer) which means you can have a hostname like *!*@i.h4x0r3d.micros0ft.because.3y3.4m.l337.0rg.

They cost money though, and once again add to your lag as you are passing through an extra node. Do a search on the 'Net for +Shell+Account if you are interested.

Just because someone is telling you something you don't want to hear or don't understand is no reason to be so rude. If your network doesn't support host-masking, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, apart from what has already been suggested, i.e. get a BNC account. A lot of networks won't allow you to connect via a BNC though, so it's up to you - live with it, or find another network that suits your requirements.

Never compare yourself to others - they're more screwed up than you think.

Good, just for that, go and sit in the corner and face the wall so we don't have to put up with your stinking attitude. I will remember your nick and not bother with any more of your questions. Go to your server's help channel and ask your question there. Thankyou for your attention. grin

Ever heard of a language called English? Want to try using it sometime? "I don't be understanding the *** he be talkin bout like all dat..." My God you managed to sum up every stereotype of an American black person in a single sentence. People complain that racial stereotypes exist, well you're one of the reasons they do. You really should be proud of yourself...

Thats more than enough! Watchdog took the time to try to explain things to you, and you respond with insults, swearing and name calling, all in a pitiful display of butchered english. Either treat people here with common courtesy or dont post again.

It really interests me where these people come from.

Not just the way he speaks or being generally insulting, but rather the ghetto slacker mentality that everything should be so easy that it doesn't need explaining, and as soon as you mention a word they don't understand... it somehow becomes YOUR fault for using it, and for even suggesting that technology may require a little learning.

Blunted206, if you don't mind... could you please entertain us with a little information about yourself? Perhaps some demographics including where you went to school and what grade you decided to stop? Did you really grow up in the inner city, or are you just a suburbanite wigger wannabe?

It doesn't pain me to see such a "bright young mind" goto waste. It pains me to see perfectly good information wasted on such a "bright young mind" as yours.

I notice that he hasn't returned for a while, probably an admission that he can't say anything intelligently.

Good grief...it truly upsets me that there are people that wish to be spoon fed and not take the responsibility of learning. I have no problem helping those that will help themselves, but this buffoon is quite a different matter. He offers nothing in return for valuable info except abuse. Oh, I forgot, we OWE him...sorry...

Ok, I run an IRCXpro server and in that software you can mask like this:
An example:
If my IP was something@123.456.789.44 The software for my server make it possible to mask a host or IP like this: something@wkwjejncncxk

That means if you are an Admin you can set it the way you like, but every admin and ops will be able to see it.

Hope this help.

I read earlier that by masking your IP, you will not be allowed in certian servers... is this with only a select few, or the majority... and why? I've got one more question... I would _absolutly_ have to own a shell account (which is an IRC server?) in order to mask my IP like so *!*@i.h4x0r3d.micros0ft.because.3y3.4m.l337.0rg?

I run a chat server and cannot easily mask my IP unless I use vhost ... of course, I'm still learning and don't really know what I'm talking about ... wink

Yeah I guessed the v was for virtual, but what actually is it and how can you set it up, that works on any server right, not just the ones that let you mask with their service thingy?

Flame wars have occured in the past. If you're so unhappy about them, please don't add fuel to them when they died months ago. If you need help with something, start a new thread.

mIRC has a proxy feature for legitimate use only, 95% of users don't need it. Help with setting proxies up can be found at www.mirc.co.uk/help/proxies.html

You can try this
http://www.privacyconnector.com
It use VPN solution to encrypt your Internet connection and make you anonymous surfing.
Just subscribe it using PayPal, and cancel the subscription immediately, you can use it for free without any charge (Because PayPal will not charge you at the trial period). But this server is very slow.....
