Speaking of linking servers, I heard someone wrote an EFNet <--> IRCnet protocol gateway, and intends to get their server linked to both networks by mid August... when the bridge will be established reuniting the two giants who have been split for 13 years that month.

It shouldn't be too hard. Once as an experiment I linked CR to Unreal and CR to Dreamforge as a three server network and it performed flawlessly apart from one channel mode and banning, as different IRCd's use different ways to disguise full IP's. Strange thing is, it is supposed to be impossible to link CR to anything apart from CR.

Raccoon, I think he was pulling your leg. Even if he could get the TS/Delay stuff sorted out, there would to be major issues with channel ownership. I don't think the ops of EFnet #c are going to be too happy about a bunch of complete strangers from IRCnet coming in and getting ops for apparently no reason, and vice versa.

Also, they've only been split for 7 years, not 13. smile

We were discussing that issue. I think the gateway intends to use nickname and channel extensions for the channels that share the same namespace. Eg, on IRCNet's side it would see it's own #mIRC and #mIRC.EFNet, while EFNet would see #mIRC and #mIRC.IRCNet. I'm not sure how he plans to handle nicknames, though I imagine once people become disconnected and reconnect and find they can nolonger use the same nick, the two nets will gradually synchronize. Channels on the other hand may take years to synchronize to where both sides see the same name.
