It seems to me that after refreshing the page every few minutes that I'm being watched. I SHOULD set things to invisible but I can't be bothered. This is more or less to say HI WATCHDOG and to ask the general question:
How would you people react if your internet actions were constantly watched AND YOU KNEW IT.
Its disconcerting me at the moment.... what about you?

Heh, I noticed the same thing. However, contrary to his name... Watchdog has likely minimized his browser window on the "Who's Online" page, which happens to refresh every 60 seconds on its own. Besides, there's nothing one could possibly construe as incriminating on here. - Raccoon

I count bad grammar and spelling as incriminating though.
I mean, if you are running for President of the United States one day and your rival plasters logs of you on a forum saying, "OMG, I r teh 1337 h4xx0r, ph34r" ... uhh.. you probly would lose a lot of votes.
Wow, was that the shittiest example ever or what?

Whoa, I had no idea there was a thing that showed me what people were doing. Now I don't have to sit and refresh the main listing every 30 minutes 20 hours a day, I can just watch you all and wait until someone gets paranoid. YES.

Racoon is quite correct. The 60 second refresh stops my dialup connection timing out. So when using dialup and happen to not be on IRC, I use that function to maintain continuity. If it bothers you then put a paper bag over your head.

How would you people react if your internet actions were constantly watched AND YOU KNEW IT. You mean like every time I use my school/work computer? It doesn't bother me at all. If it does bother you, my question would be, what exactly are you doing that you are so terribly worried about others finding out?

So why not make yourself not viewable to other users then if it bothers you so much...Its not like watchdog is sitting in front of his computer reciting "I gotcha where I wancha and now i'm gonna getcha!"... *The_Game goes back to watching the movie "Mangler 2"* (its about a computer virus that takes control of a building and killing teenagers...its quite stupid )

Old argument, but my favorite response goes back to the early days of Philip Zimmerman and PGP... why do you bother putting your letters in envelopes, when a post card would do? /me goes back to hanging curtains on the windows.

Well thats a flawed comparison. On the forum, in the "who's online" page, it says "username is reading ........" not "username has just entered his bank account number: ......." Whereas when I'm sending something in the mail, it will often contain a bank account number. And btw if I'm just sending a regular letter, I do use a postcard, why should I pay extra to send it in an envelope? I don't have anything to hide.

Scroll up... I was speaking in the broader sense, just as you were. Having nothing to hide and simple privacy are two different issues.

Yet you tell us so much about yourself through your posts. Give me 30 minutes and I'll do a complete identity writeup on you and, with a little luck, score a name/number/address with a little help from google and some databanks I have access to.
I think the most practical suggestion is not to draw attention to yourself. Bitch and moan about people knowing when you're posting a message, will only pirk people's interest.
At the end of the day, you are only as private as YOU make yourself. Change your nick to Anonymous89127, leave all the fields in your profile blank, use vague references about yourself or your life's experience and age, even avoid using pronouns that might reveal your gender. If all you do is come on here and asked direct and simple questions about mIRC, you have no reason to be so skiddish.
Watching you post a message is like watching some random person dropping a letter in a mailbox. No, more private/anonymous than that even!

um... uh... *nothing* *loox nervous and shifty eyed*
I didn't mean the 'possibly' being watched like you deal with at a school or whatever...
i meant if you knew they were conciously observing your every action

Well, just think of it as a /whois, type thing. Just on a much broader scale being that you can see what alot more than just what 1 person is doing.

Don't start him on that, we both use the same network and I'd hate him to have a complex over seeing my nick 24/7 on IRC just because I have a broadband connection at home and choose to leave it running. He'll start imagining all sorts of things.

The reason you leave your PC on 24-7, does it have anything to do with aliens?
:P
My clunky old P-II is always on at strange times of the night doing strange things to do with aliens...
