Hi guys. YES i have read the FAQ and also any posts I could find referring to PASSwords.

This is the problem:
mIRC used to work fine for me without registered name.
Now that computer crashed & i had to regist nick,
(two in fact) nothing works.
First nick:
Got string to complete registration, but no info on how to set a password. Yet program wants passwd every time I log on, have tried many things always get "incorrect".
Dont even know what passwd SHOULD be...??? If I have one who/ when was it set?

Second ID:
Tried putting a passwd into box "ID info" in the mIRC program.
Entering this password with
/NICKSERV IDENTIFY
doesnt work. Tried with the brackets <> around passwd also.

None of this stuff addressed on mIRC web pages, AFAI can tell... so how do i know/ set and verify password which program is asking me for >??? confused
Need to have verified name, am OP on a channel.

THanks Isolde

Nickname registering has nothing to do with mIRC, try joining #help or #mirc on the IRC server you use, they can probably provide better help.

Since i'm not entirely sure we are all talking about the same thing, to help you understand the different things and clarify:

You said "the program" wants a passwd. Do you mean when you open mIRC, before you connect to any server, a box pops up asking you for a passwd? Or do you mean that once you are connected to a server that you see a msg asking you to identify for your nickname? (you opened mIRC, clicked on connect, see a bunch of stuff scroll by in the status window about the server and then see something like if this is your nick you have to identify to it blahblah)

If, as i think, you mean that the problem is with a nickname you registered (not registering your copy of mIRC, thats totally diff, as is setting a passwd to lock mIRC from use) then you need to do as suggested, ask in a help channel on that network or look at their website for how to register a nick, how to complete that registration if required, and how to identify to your nick.

You do not put the passwd for your nick in mIRC's options under file/options/connect/identd, the user ID line. That usually needs to be whatever you have before the @ in file/options/connect, the email addy line. The line /nickserv identify putting-your-password-here (like /nickserv identify chicken (if that was your password)) would be typed in the status window after you connect to a server. (and no, you dont use any <>)

When you registered your nick, YOU would have set a passwd for that nick. Like maybe /nickserv register chicken somebody@some.net. chicken would be the password and somebody@some.net would be your email addy.

mIRC is software (a program) used to connect to networks (like DALnet, Efnet, Gamesnet etc) using the servers for each network. Registering nicks is different on all networks, they each have their own procedures, so it wouldnt be possible to cover that on mIRC's homepage or FAQ, but you made my day by saying you looked!

Thanx for your answer, yes I had difficulty expressing what the problem is; you said
<< When you registered your nick, YOU would have set a passwd for that nick. Like maybe /nickserv register chicken somebody@some.net. chicken would be the password and somebody@some.net would be your email addy. >>

Trouble is, when I was given that command, was not told that the password is what came before e-mail addr.
Though I had noted the command, and gave what was entered as passwd (eventually this was one of my guesses) NS tells me "invalid password".

Maybe I just have to let nick expire and start over.

Anyway, thanks people.

Without knowing the network involved, i cant say for sure since each has their own ways of doing this. For example, on DALnet, what you would do is use the command including the password of your choice (passwd isnt a good choice, use something not easily guessed) and you would then get an email to complete the registration by using an authorization number in a command you see in the email. When you identify to that nick, using something like /identify thepasswordhere you have to be sure you use it exactly as you did in the command. CHICKEN isnt the same as chicken or cHiCkEn. Its likely that if an auth code is needed to complete the registration and you dont do that, the nick will drop in a certain period of time.

If you dont see help channels listed in the MOTD(Message of the DAY, all the stuff you see scroll by when you connect), see if there is a #mIRC on the network you are on ( just type /join #mIRC) and ask what channel you can go to for help with a nick registration problem.
