I run mirc from c:\mirc\ folder
at some point an update installed a new folder with only shortcuts for mirc/help/etc in .. program files (x86)\ which only effect was to make the desktop and start icons a default piece of paper. used copilot ai to troubleshoot and found the errant folder. the folder files were dated 12/1 (shortcuts to wrong file location). deleted them and recreated start menu shortcuts and put them in proper windows directory and on the desktop and that restored mirc icon since mIRC.exe was in the proper shortcut location. just information in case others report same issue.

Thanks for your bug report. I have not been able to reproduce this issue here so far. Which version of Windows are you using? Are you able to reproduce the issue with a specific set of steps or installer options? I tried various combinations of options here, including portable mode.
