I decided to go through the default channel favorites that come packaged with mIRC (currently v7.55) to see which ones are actually in use, or just plain empty, on any of the popular networks that new users might find themselves on (plus others*).
These are the default channels currently found in mIRC's Favorites list:
#AllNiteCafe #Beginner #Cafebleu #Casual #CasualChat #Chat-World #Chataholics #Chataway #chatbuddies #Chatterz #Chatzone #Cheers #Cybar #CyberCafe #CyberChat #CyberFriends #CyberParty #CyberWorld #DewDropInn #Family_Chat #FunChat #Funfactory #Funshack #Giggles #Help #HelpDesk #Hottub #IRCAddicts #ircbar #irchelp #irclub #ircnewbies #ircpassage #ircsupport #irctalk #IRCWavPlayers #JustChillin #mIRC #mIRC4Dummies #mIRC_Colors #mIRC_HelpDesk #mIRC_Lounge #mIRC_Rainbow #mIRC_Wavs'N'Text #mIRCAide #mIRCBeginners #mIRChat #mIRCHelp #mIRCIntro #mIRCLife #mIRCScripts #mIRCSetUp #mIRCsupport #NetChat #new2irc #new2mIRC #newbiehelp #newbies #NewsTalk #PartyHouse #PlanetChat #PopInn #SpeakEasy #Speaker's_corner #Teen #TeenConnection #TeenFactory #TeenLounge #TeenParty #Teens #TeenWorld #TeenZone #TwilightTavern #Txtworld #UserGuide #UserHelp #Windows95 #Winsock #Wobblyworld #Worldchat (80 channels)
These are the default networks that new users are randomly connected to:
DALnet EFnet Freenode GameSurge IRCnet Quakenet Rizon SwiftIRC Undernet WebChat
In addition to the above, I also included these networks in my survey:
EsperNet GeekShed IRCHighWay OFTC SlashNET Snoonet (16 networks total)
Here are the summary results of my survey. It's the number of networks that each of the channels appeared on, and the cumulative population across each of the networks. I excluded channels that were empty (just me) or where joining was prohibited or that redirected to #help. I have also subtracted myself from the cumulative population totals. Results are sorted by number of networks they appear on, then cumulative population. (The channels in red have a VERY TINY population on each server, even if they do exist on a lot of servers).
#Channel(Networks)(CumulativePopulation):
#Help(15)(959) #mIRC(13)(235) #Worldchat(10)(282) #AllNiteCafe(8)(285) #Chat-World(8)(153) #Beginner(8)(96) #Cafebleu(7)(52) #CyberCafe(7)(48) #CyberChat(7)(26) #CyberWorld(6)(97) #irchelp(6)(70) #Casual(6)(52) #Cybar(6)(51) #FunChat(6)(37) #CyberFriends(6)(25) #IRCAddicts(6)(13) #Chatzone(5)(115) #Family_Chat(5)(110) #HelpDesk(5)(106) #Txtworld(5)(43) #Giggles(5)(41) #mIRCBeginners(5)(35) #Teens(5)(26) #SpeakEasy(5)(24) #newbies(5)(24) #Cheers(5)(22) #NetChat(5)(15) #irctalk(5)(15) #CyberParty(5)(14) #Hottub(4)(47) #ircnewbies(4)(37) #Teen(4)(31) #mIRC4Dummies(4)(24) #Windows95(4)(22) #mIRC_Rainbow(4)(22) #chatbuddies(4)(22) #Chatterz(4)(21) #CasualChat(4)(21) #mIRCsupport(4)(15) #mIRC_HelpDesk(4)(13) #Funfactory(4)(13) #mIRC_Lounge(4)(12) #PlanetChat(4)(11) #newbiehelp(4)(11) #Chataway(4)(11) #UserHelp(4)(9) #new2irc(4)(9) #TeenWorld(4)(7) #ircsupport(3)(46) #mIRCLife(3)(28) #mIRC_Colors(3)(18) #mIRCHelp(3)(17) #irclub(3)(16) #Chataholics(3)(16) #mIRCScripts(3)(13) #ircpassage(3)(13) #Funshack(3)(13) #TwilightTavern(3)(11) #mIRCSetUp(3)(11) #mIRCIntro(3)(11) #mIRCAide(3)(10) #PopInn(3)(9) #new2mIRC(3)(9) #NewsTalk(3)(8) #mIRC_Wavs'N'Text(3)(7) #JustChillin(3)(7) #DewDropInn(3)(7) #TeenParty(3)(6) #ircbar(3)(68) #TeenZone(3)(5) #UserGuide(2)(38) #Winsock(2)(9) #Speaker's_corner(2)(7) #TeenFactory(2)(6) #PartyHouse(2)(6) #TeenConnection(2)(5) #TeenLounge(2)(3) #Wobblyworld(2)(2) #mIRChat(1)(7) #IRCWavPlayers(0)(0)
For example, #Winsock only exists on 2 networks, and has only 9 users between them.
If we ignore individual channels with a population of less-than 10 users per network, we get this:
#Help(13)(946) #mIRC(9)(224) #AllNiteCafe(5)(279) #Worldchat(3)(262) #Chatzone(3)(109) #HelpDesk(3)(103) #Beginner(3)(65) #irchelp(3)(59) #Casual(3)(40) #Chat-World(2)(124) #Family_Chat(2)(105) #CyberWorld(2)(88) #ircbar(2)(62) #Cybar(2)(42) #Cafebleu(2)(40) #CyberCafe(2)(33) #Hottub(2)(33) #ircsupport(1)(39) #UserGuide(1)(37) #Txtworld(1)(33) #mIRCBeginners(1)(25) #Giggles(1)(24) #ircnewbies(1)(24) #Teen(1)(24) #mIRCLife(1)(21) #FunChat(1)(18) #mIRC4Dummies(1)(15) #newbies(1)(13) #CasualChat(1)(12) #chatbuddies(1)(10) #Windows95(1)(10) #Chataholics(0)(0) #Chataway(0)(0) #Chatterz(0)(0) #Cheers(0)(0) #CyberChat(0)(0) #CyberFriends(0)(0) #CyberParty(0)(0) #DewDropInn(0)(0) #Funfactory(0)(0) #Funshack(0)(0) #IRCAddicts(0)(0) #irclub(0)(0) #ircpassage(0)(0) #irctalk(0)(0) #IRCWavPlayers(0)(0) #JustChillin(0)(0) #mIRC_Colors(0)(0) #mIRC_HelpDesk(0)(0) #mIRC_Lounge(0)(0) #mIRC_Rainbow(0)(0) #mIRC_Wavs'N'Text(0)(0) #mIRCAide(0)(0) #mIRChat(0)(0) #mIRCHelp(0)(0) #mIRCIntro(0)(0) #mIRCScripts(0)(0) #mIRCSetUp(0)(0) #mIRCsupport(0)(0) #NetChat(0)(0) #new2irc(0)(0) #new2mIRC(0)(0) #newbiehelp(0)(0) #NewsTalk(0)(0) #PartyHouse(0)(0) #PlanetChat(0)(0) #PopInn(0)(0) #SpeakEasy(0)(0) #Speaker's_corner(0)(0) #TeenConnection(0)(0) #TeenFactory(0)(0) #TeenLounge(0)(0) #TeenParty(0)(0) #Teens(0)(0) #TeenWorld(0)(0) #TeenZone(0)(0) #TwilightTavern(0)(0) #UserHelp(0)(0) #Winsock(0)(0) #Wobblyworld(0)(0)
It's my recommendation that at least all of the dark-red channels be removed from the default channel list. I would also go a step further and remove all the bright-red channels as they are just unpopular and mostly exist as "Zombie Channels" simply because mIRC has them as default channels, so they've become a sort of status symbol or network obligation. I also recommend removing the #Teen* channels, given that the majority of IRC networks I've tried joining them on have them locked down as inappropriate.
The new list would then become:
#Help #mIRC #AllNiteCafe #Worldchat #Chatzone #HelpDesk #Beginner #irchelp #Casual #Chat-World #Family_Chat #CyberWorld #ircbar #Cybar #Cafebleu #CyberCafe #Hottub (17 channels)
Alphabetized:
#AllNiteCafe #Beginner #Cafebleu #Casual #Chat-World #Chatzone #Cybar #CyberCafe #CyberWorld #Family_Chat #Help #HelpDesk #Hottub #ircbar #irchelp #mIRC #Worldchat

Here's the nitty-gritty of my research. Here I've included all channels surveyed on each network, including the channel population, along with how many ops, voiced, and regular users there were (including myself as a regular user). So if there are 2 people, it's just me and someone else (probably a bot). I have also included statistics on each network, such as global users, channels formed, and number of public channels that appear in /list with greater-than 9 users (/list >9). I marked in blue channels that redirected to a useful channel besides #help. And I have marked in red channels that I approximate to be "zombie channels," in that they only exist because mIRC has them in the default channel list. Zombie channels are often botted by the same person and nobody talks. They usually have less than 10 people in them. #Winsock and #Windows95 are perfect examples of zombie channels. #Teen* channels are very often prohibited.
Default networks:

New Survey:
What are some good channels that tend to exist on multiple networks, today? Off the top of my head, I would say #politics and maybe #computers.
What about a nice mix of network-specific channels that would be friendly to new users and feature some topical variety... in the event Khaled adds a feature for favorite channels by specific network?
Contribute below.
The channels should have been around for at least 5 years and are fairly active.

Here are some channels that common between 3-or-more of the 15 networks listed above in /list >9. EsperNet is excluded because they prohibit /list. I did not join each channel. Many of these are going to be +s on some networks and hidden from /list. Sadly, most discussion channels on freenode begin with '##' instead of '#', ie, ##math and ##english.

Mr. Khaled, would you be inclined to do network-specific channel favorites? Ie, include a network drop-down, and one for All Networks (excludes network-specific entries). And a selector (ini section) for Defaults vs User-Defined.
If you're willing to put in the feature, I'll be willing to put in the work for identifying subjectively worthy channels with neutral objectivity and solicit the channel owners for permission for inclusion.
I recommend moving this from mirc.ini to favorites.ini
You might also move the [chanhist] here if so inclined.

Thanks for looking through the favorites list.
As many of you are probably aware, this list is so old that it pre-dates life in our solar system :-]
I receive emails all the time from people who want their channels added to the favorites list. But it takes time to vet channels, check them before each release, get permission from channel owners to add them to the list, make sure that their content is legal/safe/etc. Over time, the will to do this gradually faded.
If you'd like to give this a go, I would be happy for you to curate it :-)
As for adding a network column to the favorites treeview dialog: I would have to find a custom dialog control that supports this and transition the existing code to use it. Not sure how difficult that would be.
That said, on my to-do list is an item that states: integrate the channels list dialog and the favorites dialog into the channels list window.
Both of these options would take time/work and may not be accomplished soon.
In the meantime, you could still come up with a list of curated channels, network-specific (since each channel allows you to specify a network), and we can move on from there.
The only issue is that, in the past, removing channels was always a sensitive issue, especially if a channel has been around for a long time. But it would make sense to create a list of genuinely useful/interesting channels for the default networks.

As those of you who have been downloading the recent betas are probably aware, I have been working on improving the way the favorites dialog works during this beta cycle. One of the reasons is so that I can update the default channels in the favorites list which, as mentioned in the above posts, is so old that many of the channels no longer exist or are no longer relevant.
The favorites dialog now has sortable column headers, a network column, and a network listbox that allows you to view network-specific channels. It now also auto-selects the active network when popup on connect is enabled, to show favorite channels for the network you are connected to. It has taken some work and back-and-forth tweaking but I think it is now working fairly well.
I have created a new list of default channels using a script that lists the channels on the top networks in servers.ini and combines and sorts them into groups of common network channels. It then filters out channels based on different criteria (size, names, etc.) and creates a list of channels in order of how common they are, how many users they have, and so on. For each channel, it specifies a list of networks where that channel exists, listing the networks in order of users. I then read through the resulting (pretty large!) list manually and chose channels that seem topical, of general and specific interest, and so on. There is a bit of everything in there. I tried to choose channels that exist on multiple networks but there are those that exist on only one. I also tried to choose a spread so that each of the default top [networks] in servers.ini has a set to choose from, for users new to IRC.
This list should be in the next release. If you have any comments, suggestions, etc., let me know.

The new list looks very good, IMO. A welcome update, although I am still going to miss seeing #winsock in there. My (personal, highly specific, biased) feedback: 1. On QuakeNet, #help is the official QuakeNet IRC support channel, and among the largest channels on the network. It just happens to be secret (+s), but that is not intended to stop real people from joining. I think QuakeNet should be among the networks listed for #help. 2. You may already have considered this, but I am still going to try: on Libera.Chat, #mIRC exists but redirects to ##mIRC, as the channel is not an official representation of mIRC Co Ltd. As such, #mIRC itself is empty, but joining it still gets you to the right place. As such, I would say that including Libera.Chat in the list for #mIRC is still a good idea. The same may apply to a few other channels in the current list.

Hi Khaled, could you make it so that default channels are stored as a separate INI section that can receive updates with new mIRC versions and will always remain fresh, even for long-time users, so that existing users can enjoy this curation?

could you make it so that default channels are stored as a separate INI section that can receive updates with new mIRC versions We discussed a similar idea relating to the servers list some time ago and how this would not be practical. The only way this would work is if, after a new version is installed with a new favorites list, mIRC displayed a Text Merge type dialog that allowed users to compare/merge the old and new lists for all of the different parameters of added/removed/changed channels. For example, if the new list has #mIRC with a new network added, the user would need to be able to merge that into their existing #mIRC entry, preserving their current #mIRC settings, where they may have added a password, removed some networks, etc. Or if the new list includes a channel that they intentionally deleted from the old list, they would need to remember to not merge it in. And so on. The user would need to do this manually for each channel in the favorites list after each new update.
