The second my mIRC (6.03) has connected to a network i get one of the "lovely" Microsoft popups...

"mIRC has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
(as long as I dont click on any of the options on this popup, mIRC will continue to run - and I can chat on the network. But if I try to load up another network (/server -m ...) mIRC dies)

Im running XP Professional. This problem never came up when running version 6.03 on a W2K box.

Can anyone troubleshoot..?

Any scripts that may cause it to crash?
Certain server?

Does this still happen with a basic installation of mIRC with default settings, and no scripts, etc.?

No, there are no scripts or anything. It is a basic installation of mIRC 6.03

happens on all servers after it gets connected. Very strange, like if the server messages are too much to handle for this XP box. (P4 2gHz, 512MB RAM etc)

Type /debug -t conerror.txt after starting mIRC, and then try connecting to the server. When mIRC crashes, conerror.txt will show a timestamped log showing us what happened just prior to mIRC crashing. Perhaps you could paste the last several lines of that log for us.

Hi Racoon, it doenst look like the conerror.txt will resolve the mystery - but I will leave that up to you.

here we go:

............................
The rest of the file is /motd and such

Still a mystery to me. I wish my admin would let me get W2k back instead of XP

it's that "and such" that might be the answer. Could you paste the last 5-10 lines at the end of the file so we know when mIRC is crashing.

I connected to the same server with a newly installed mIRC 6.03 and it all worked fine here. Tested under Windows XP Pro with the latest patches.

If you read it properly

Do you have identd server enabled? (FIle > Options > Connect > Identd)

if your using windows xp it has a built in firewall u will ned to setup an identd services in it or disable that firewall ..... to disable it this is the procedure :

click start then choose all programs then click accessories then click communications ........ then click on network connections

this should open up a window now at this point u should see to the right side of this window a list of your possible connections ....... click on the one u activly use ( mostly this will only contain one thing) once u highlight it u then left click over it to open a menu ..... click properties and this opens a new window ....... click on the advanced tab in the window
if your firewall is enabled it will have the box in the top of this menu ticked ... to disable the firewall untick it ...........

now if your choose to setup identd into this firewal u will do it also from this menu

to do so once its enabled u will need to then click on the settings button at the bottom of this window ...... it opens another window ..... click the services tab then click the add button in that window ........ this will open up another window

under the field labeled description of services type Identd for name or ip address u should type in 127.0.0.1 (thats your internal ip address or name it the same name u named your oc in your setup if u can remember it) for the port settings of internal and external set it to 113 and select tcp next to these ports u define then click OK your all setup for identd to work thru your firewall ....... click ok and get out of that menu and back into mirc ..... restart your mirc and attempt the connection and it should work if u have identd enabled now

Hi guys, thanks for all the good advice - the solution for my problem was however found elsewhere on the board. Another user entered a post with same problem - and he himself found the solution.

It was as simple as changing the local info from 'server' to 'normal'.

Thanks again laugh
