Request to have an option for highlights to overide colour codes in text so I don't get this:

What exactly should it look like then, in your opinion?

It is not very clear to me from your example what the problem is.

It should display in the highlight colour. You can try this yourself by creating a highlight (Alt+B -> Highlight) with some arbitrary colour (say, red) and sending yourself a message with said highlight word inside Ctrl+K 1 (black). The message will show up as black instead of the expected red. This might be confusing to some.
