I am enjoying getting to know IRC - some interesting stuff going on. I am concerned that my details are too much in the open. I obviously use an alias as my nick, but see most of my email address is also displayed in some IRC programs/chatrooms. Part of it is obscured, but the bit giving my real name is totally uncovered. I have been looking around the mIRC tools to see how to change my details - and I can't find where they are . So my question is - how do I change the details sent to each channel about me when I join them? I would rather do this within mIRC rather than issue commands to each and every channel I join.

In the section called Connect you will find all your info. Note that you must be disconnected to be able to change all info there.

First, don't put your real information into the e-mail field if you're concerned about that. Second, if you're using identd, set it to use your nick (or something else) as the username instead of using your email as the username.

You cannot hide your host/IP information from mIRC. Some networks allow you to mask that information (the part after the @ in nick!ident@host.com). However, network admins can still see your real details. There are options to hide your true host/IP information through the use of "anonymity" utilities. However, your host/IP really isn't personal and although your ISP could identify who you are if someone gave them your host/IP information, they aren't going to hand that information out to anyone without a court order. So there's little to worry about unless you're doing something you shouldn't.
