I have Windows Vista and mIRC v. 6.35.

In Windows Explorer, the icon for mirc.exe is a generic icon only with no option in Properties to change it. However, any shortcut does allow me to change its icon. Only the actual program file has this problem.

Even more strange: If I change the filename of mirc.exe to anything else, such as mircb.exe, the icon appears appropriately. If I change it back to mirc.exe, it reverts to the generic. Reinstalling did not help.

I have looked for others discussing this and just found something about the author protecting the icon, but I have never seen a program icon that is dependent on the actual filename.

Any insight into this? Thanks.

My guess would be that it's either a corrupt icon cache or a misbehaving anti-virus program. Try purging the icon cache and whitelisting the mIRC executable in any anti-virus software you are running.
