It seems odd that for colours, that we use single digits when it is capable to going into the double digits. I would propose that when hitting "red", when doing control-k, it comes up as "01", instead of just "1". I realize it uses more bytes up, and consequently more bandwidth, but I think colour codes need to be standardized.

And since mIRC is also the leading IRC client, there is no reason not to expand into numbers 17 through 98 (99 is for transparency). (I realize they repeat the basic 16 starting at 16 all over again.) That are 82 additional colour slots there. I see no reason why we can't use a 6-bit RGB palette placed into numbers 16 through 79, with 80-82 left blank.

6-bit RGB palette have 4 shades red, 4 shades green, 4 shades blue. 4x4x4 = 64. (that is 2 bits + 2 bits + 2 bits)

What's the format for html colours? Because, wouldn't that be quite bulky? Given that mIRC doesn't support it, it would look all weird to those using older clients, which would be many people.

With my idea, at least, if someone used control-kNN (where NN is any two digit number, from 00 to 99), it would show some colour, even if the wrong one, as opposed to garbled stuff.

I agree with the double digits. It should be that way.

~ Edit ~
It could be left-click for normal as it is now and right-click for double digit.

One problem would be having odd colors where another color would normally be. For example, control-k 52 is red. If we use a 64 color scheme over 16 through 89, old clients would see something unexpected.

To tackle this problem in the best possible manner, the 64 color scheme (4 shades of each RGB color) could have the palette offset so each shade of red, each shade of green, and each shade of green, falls on a number that has a color similar to the old scheme. This would keep oddities to a minimum.

So if 20, 36, 52, and 68 are all red currently, then those could get the following RGB colors: 100, 200, 300, and 400 (being shades of red, with no green or blue). This process could be repeated with all shades, and then combinations as close as possible.

I was just talking about the double digit idea with the current color format. In the color index dialog (ctrl+k) left clicking on red would give you 4 as is does now and right clicking on red would give you 04.

My mistake. Yeah, regardless, it should be made double digit.

Sure, only colours 10 through 15 will require two digits, and someone could argue that 0 through 9 save bytes (especially since IRC servers limit how much you can put on a line), but I feel standards are important.

It would be as simple as this for other IRC clients. If two numerical digits follow character-3, that is a colour. If a comma follows those numbers, then the two numerical digits following the comma is the background colour.

On another note, another idea would be to have numbers 16 through 95 be used for shades. For example, since 4, 20, 36, 52, 68, and 84 are all the colour red, then 20 ... 84 would be shades of red. 20, 36, and 52 would be progressively darker than 4, and 68 and 84 would be progressively lighter than 4.

mIRC's color codes have always been controversial. Yet Khaled has never changed them. See here for more...
