I used to be able to get some proxies to work, but now every one of them seems to be instantly banned on the server I'm connecting to. What can I do about this? I've also heard about SSL, vhosts, BNCs, bouncers, and shells but I'm unfamiliar with them. How effective would these be in hiding my IP? And where and how could I get access to them?

I wrote a sticky post about hiding your IP address with some (I hope) useful links. Open proxies are often auto-banned from almost every IRC network due to the level of abuse usually received from them. Unless you're prone to being packeted for some bizarre reason having your IP show isn't usually as big a deal as people make it out to be.

Perhaps in that sticky instead of just linking to Google, you can also link to the hostmask usermode category at http://searchirc.com/network-type/Hostmask
