I used mIRC on my home computer and it works fine. I recently bought a Laptop and Router to go wireless, but mIRC doesn't work on this computer for some reason. Every time I try to connect to any server I get this message:

* Connect retry #5 irc.efnet.org (6667) (dns pool)
-
* Unable to connect to server (Connection refused)

Thanks for any help

Have you tried other networks, not just other servers for the EfNet network?

Unfortunately, the Connection refused message is one of the least informative of server messages.

I have tried efnet, afternet, undernet, and a few random ones. I read several other threads to see if I could figure out my problem so I turned Windows Firewall off and tried but that wasn't it.

Check your router settings to make sure it's not set up to disallow connecting to IRC. Also try another port (not 6667).

How do I check my router settings? I tried a few ports, but that didn't work. I typed in 6668, 110, and 6660.
EDIT:
I just tried a random server called Absurd-IRC and I got on fine.
Abjects works too. About half the servers work and half don't.

Your router would have come with some form of documentation telling you how to access the settings. Usually, you'll connect to http://192.168.1.1/ and then use whatever default login that documentation tells you to use (usually blanks or admin/admin or something basic like that). For more router help, check http://www.portforward.com/ .

As for using different ports, not all networks allow you to use ports other than 6667.

Try /server irc.servername.net 6668

(obviously, change the server info)

Well thanks for the help. I went though the processes you recommended and it still isn't working. My router doesn't seem to be the problem I guess. Could this narrow it down: I am also blocked from chat using Java and X-chat. It is only on certain servers.

That just confirms that it's most likely a port issue or IRC being blocked in general.

I turned off my firewall to see if that was it and it didn't work.

Okay. I deleted it and re-downloaded it using a different location and it worked once. Once I logged off it stopped working again. I can log onto a few servers. Can this narrow down the problem?

Ok this may narrow down the problem. I can go to each channel only once. I get on but if I log out I can no longer go to that specific server.
