Hi, just a quick note that $os returns "Vista" - Should this happen?

(Using build 6001)

All else seems fine (at the moment)

Thanks,
JD

I expect that this will be the case until such time as Khaled is able to distinguish between the various versions. At present, mIRC correctly identifies Windows 95, 98, ME, XP and Vista.

I believe that the version you're using came out after Vista was released, and mIRC hasn't had a released update in that time.

Never wondered 'bout this. $os returns a short token: 95, 98, NT, ME, 2K, XP, 2003 or Vista. As it returned neither "Home" nor "Professional" using XP, why should it return the Edition (out of 25(!?)) using Vista... smile

Yepp, you’re right. I mixed up Edition and Version numbering (RTM build)

Longhorn is the beta name of the next windows server. The Longhorn name will be dropped once the production version is released. The release name (Server 2007 or 2008) will surely be supported by mIRC when it is released, but until then, it will likely continue to return Vista for $os.

If you need to get a more exact OS response (such as for a script), you should look into using COM objects to get it. They give a much more detailed response (including Professional/Home/etc and builds).

actually it should not, Longhorn is NOT and never was final and official product.

same goes for Windows Neptune and Windows Whistler
they were only alpha versions, a concept of what next Win OS should be. (in their time)

It appears a few days ago Bill Gates announced "Windows Server 2008" - is now the time to add it? smirk
