Ok, here's a weird one.

I had mIRC working just fine before I went on vacation for two weeks. I am on a Belkin router and was having The DCC Problem, but solved that by opening up those identD and DCC ports as instructed on various sites. Everything was working fine. I could connect to any server and initiate DCC sends, no problem.

So... I get back from vacation and now I can't connet to ANY irc servers. I just get these errors:

[13:54] * Connect retry #93 213.221.165.248 (6667)-
[13:54] * Unable to connect (Connection refused)

Does anyone know what the problem might be here?
I was literally not using my computer at all during this time and nothing else has changed....

TIA,
Amdi

Have you tried servers on a different network to see if you can connect? Did you check the website for the network involved to see if they are having some probs or different servers/ports to try?

See this thread for description of that error.

Yes, I've checked out that thread before.

I'm having the same problem with *any* server that I try. I tried several dozen. All give me the same error. That leads me to believe that the problem is probably on my end. I'm just not sure why it started.... frown

Are you running your mIRC from a college or university by any chance? I'm only suggesting this because most schools do not allow IRC on their network. If this is the case, you may want to ask the tech department about it.

If you are not running mIRC from a school then you may disregard this post. Just throwing some suggestions in y our direction.

No, I'm not at a university.

My ISP, AT&T, was just bought up by Comcast though.... I wonder if they could possibly have started blocking IRC....

since i know they are working, try these and let us know what happens:

/server b0rk.uk.quakenet.org
/server 213.221.165.248

No, neither of those two work:

[10:59] * Connecting to b0rk.uk.quakenet.org (6667)
[10:59] * Unable to connect (Connection refused)

[11:00] * Connecting to 213.221.165.248 (6667)
[11:00] * Unable to connect (Connection refused)

Is it safe to assume you have tried other server ports besides 6667? (in case you dont know, you can specifiy a port like /server whatever.server.here:6669)

When all else fails, i usually start at the beginning (whether its logical for the situation or not) and check the basics.
-is everything in the connect options filled in properly
(including making sure firewall is set to NONE, under local info try both normal and server lookup method)

-turn off any scripts or put a clean copy of mIRC in another directory

-make sure you dont have mIRC or the server ports blocked in any router/firewall/lan/network and that all settings are as they should be, and that mIRC is getting the correct ip for you.

-check your router firmware

-if you have adsl and have access to telnet or web into the settings, check them to be sure they arent blocking

-check with your isp. others may have had the same prob, there could be a dns prob, etc (they arent usually too interested in IRC related probs, but cant hurt to ask)

-run a good (or more than one good) virus scan

I ended up just reinstalling windows (I was having other problems as well) and now everything works again....

Don't know what the problem was, but it's fixed so that's all that matters....

Thanks for all your help.

simple answer NO ..... reason ... the university u are at has blocked irc access ..... we cannot help u get around that ..... u could talk to your schools tech dept. and see if they will allow u it ... but chances are they will tell u NO also

That network is apparently down, and I'm not at all suprised. All 6 of their servers are hosted at EXACTLY the same place. That means if one server goes down, the entire network goes down. My advice to you would be find somewhere else to chat.

Well I tried each of their IPs (from 2 different machines) and I got connection timed out to each one.
