And deal with many, many people that bought mIRC and resend the code, just to have it cracked in a week or two?

Any code can be cracked. If someone doesn't want to pay, they won't. I always prefer software that doesn't require a person who DID pay to jump through hoops to use the software. Really long and complex serial numbers and cd keys don't harm pirates, but make life more difficult for legitimate users.
