Some networks support virtual hosting, where you (or an IRCop) can set a virtual host for you. With a virtual host, people doing a /whois on you will see the virtual host information (exceptions are the IRCops who will see both the virtual and the real host information). As to other stuff, it depends on exactly what you're wanting to change/hide. Some information can be changed easily, while other information is almost (if not impossible) to hide (depending on who you're wanting to hide it from).

You could always set +x on connection then make sure you join the channels once your ip has been hidden. (That's what I do.)

On certain networks +x will automatically obfuscate your host for you. But on others you will need to register an account with an authentication service. (E.g. AuthServ, NickServ, Q, etc.) then auth, this will then hide your host.

QuakeNet have //mode $me +x for hide your host, but as far as i know it's not many networks that suport it. an other way is to use a bouncer, but they often cost money to have "if you dont know someone that running a linux box, and its hooked up to the net 24/7"

if ($me != tired) { return } | else { echo -a Get a pot of coffee now $+($me,.) }

MOST networks support some kind of host masking, instead of folks here trying to guess the correct way to change modes on different networks look for a help room on the network/server you are wanting to connect to and ask there. Oh and you will always be able to see your own information, the masking feature only affects others who try and whois you.
