Ok, isn't a good time to ask about a 'bug' about this past version, but I'm using it and I need help. Norton AntiVirus detected a BackDoor virus (or trojan, I dunno really) into mIRC.exe, but I'm pretty sure that the IRC's installer was downloaded from the original website (here). I don't see any problem, but sometimes, when I connect, I'm banned from the server for trying to connect with this backdoor. Is this a known bug, or simply my installer was infected by virus?

Thank you for helping. smirk

What version of Norton are you running? Some virus scanners do detect mIRC, but usually it's something like what McAfee calls a "Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP)". They usually don't call it a virus, but just warn you that it is there in case you didn't install it and something else did.

If it's actually calling it a backdoor, then either Norton's virus definition file incorrectly identifies it as such -- maybe someone who has Norton can verify if that's the case with the latest definition file. Otherwise, the exe is actually infected or else you have a script that is infected. Usually, a script won't make the virus scanner point the finger at the exe, but instead at the mrc/ini file. But it can make the networks ban you, so I thought I'd suggest that as an option.

I would suggest clicking on the Download mIRC link on the left side of this forum and trying it again and see what happens. Make sure to install it to a new location.

I seem to remember at least one virus scanner's heuristic updates did at one point identify a string that mIRC contains as belonging to a virus.

As long as you are certain that you have a good, clean copy of mIRC (from http://www.mirc.co.uk/get.html), I understand you can set the virus scan to not check (or perhaps ignore postives on) a given executable.

However, I also believe that some strings that are checked include backdoor scripts, so you may want to verify that it is the mIRC executable that is triggering your virus scanner, and not some rogue script you inadvertently installed.

HTH.

Well, I've downloaded the new version (6.2) and it seens good now. The strange thing is that Norton find a 'backdoor' virus and some servers says the same. It's weird because that is an original version. Ok, I'm now with the new version (6.02 to 6.2 it's really different xD) but I don't like the registration window when start. Well, if is there someway to hide it, I'll appreciate to know because I don't have money to a registration key.

Heh, thanks for helping.

You can hide it by registering. That's all.
